Activity 2

Development and presentation of a series of special exhibitions including works from the museum's own collection as well as from other institutions and private collections throughout the world. FY10 highlights included: Paint Made Flesh, featuring three generations of painters working from 1950 forward; a Man Ray exhibition which included the African works displayed in conjunction with the works in the photographs; a Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition which documented the origins and full range of her abstract work; and two exhibitions featuring predominantly white paintings by Pousette-Dart and Robert Ryman. Each exhibition features printed material, guide by cell audio tours, and extensive programming. Introductory videos are featured on YouTube. All of the FY10 exhibitions were accompanied by major scholarly works. The museum has also initiated a series of site-specific installations by living artists, which most often permit visitors to experience the installation process and communicate with the artists as they work.

Activity 3

Management and maintenance of the museum's permanent collection of approximately 3000 works originally created beginning in 1913 by Duncan Phillips and his wife Marjorie Phillips. The collection was opened to the public beginning in 1921 as the nation's first museum of modern art. Activities include conservation, acquisition of new works (47 by gift and 4 by purchase in FY10), digital reproduction for publications and for presentation on the museum's website and on ArtStor, research, and interpretation to the public. The museum lends to colleague institutions frequently. During FY10, 35 works were featured in major exhibitions, including exhibitions in 18 foreign venues. The museum also mounted an exhibition of its American works which traveled to Rovereto, Italy in FY10.
