American University: Partner in Our Community

COMMUNITY SERVICE Many of AU's partnerships with local governments, businesses, and individuals exemplify the university's commitment to public service. AU views itself as a private university with a public responsibility. During the 2014 calendar year, more than 3,200 AU students contributed APPROXIMATIVELY 130,000 hours of community service in the District of Columbia. The university worked with numerous local organizations and participated in myriad community service activities including: Campus Kitchen Project, Community-Based Learning and Research, DC Reads, DC Reads "Kids to Campus Day", Dr. Seuss Day, Freshman Service Experience and One-Day Service Events WORKING WITH DC SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS AU's School of Education, Teaching & Health prepares education students to become elementary and secondary school teachers. AU places student teachers in DC classrooms full time for 15 weeks to assist in teaching all aspects of the school curriculum. The DC Public Schools Chancellor has praised AU's partnerships and projects with public schools, ranging from professional training to volunteer tutoring to workshops and programs across academic disciplines. Some of the programs include: 1) Institute for Innovation in Education, an interdisciplinary organization committed to conducting, administering, and disseminating educational research and research-informed professional development initiatives. 2) Math for America DC (MfA DC) and From the Laboratory to the Classroom: Building Capacity for Math and Science Teaching in the Classroom (Lab2Class) programs. The goal of both programs is to ensure excellence in science and/or mathematics teaching in DC public and public charter middle and high schools by recruiting, training, and retaining talented science and mathematics teachers who commit to teaching in DC schools for a four-year period. 3) The Team Nutrition program where AU works with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education to expand nutrition education and wellness activities in 12 high-need middle schools in DC. 4) Jumpstart, a program that offers language and literacy development in preschools serving low-income children. Seventy AU students from across campus, known as Corps members, volunteer with this AmeriCorps program, partnering with three public charter schools in Ward 7 and 8. 5) Imagination Quest (IQ) involves collaboration between AU and Imagination Stage. Through an AU grant, more than 60 teachers in the DC public schools, grades K-12, have taken a three-credit graduate course in arts-based teaching and learning. 6) The Eagle Endowment for Public and Community Service is a student-initiated endowment fund that provides service grants to students three times a year. In recent years, grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 have been awarded for projects in DC public schools and elsewhere. 7) WAMU 88.5 FM's Youth Voices program teaches selected high school students how to create a radio feature story about an issue that affects their lives and community. WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF LAW The Washington College of Law's highly-ranked clinical programs provide free legal services to poor and otherwise underrepresented area residents. About 230 law students per year participate in these clinics, which serve a variety of clients. In addition, eight WCL students each year represent low-income clients facing eviction in DC Landlord and Tenant Court as participants in the DC Law Students in Court program, an independent legal service provider in the District. The law school's Equal Justice Foundation (EJF), established in 1989, provides grants to law students who have obtained unpaid summer positions with public interest organizations, which provide critical services to underrepresented members of the local community. AN OPEN DOOR POLICY AU maintains a good neighbor policy by working with neighbors, local community organizations, and the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in the campus area. Led by the director of community relatio
