Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The environmental working group (ewg) is committed to empowering people to live healthier lives in healthier environments. We are a nonprofit research and advocacy organization with a community made up of millions of consumers who stand-up for healthy food, farms, water and people.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Toxics and human health - EWG's cutting-edge research propels change that protects people from health problems attributed to a wide array of toxic contaminants in food, water, air, and consumer products. EWG's interactive safety guide for cosmetics (Skin Deep) garners 2 million searches monthly. It empowers consumers seeking safer products, and reveals policy gaps that allow hazardous ingredients in everyday products. EWG's national tap-water quality atlas discloses water contaminants in 40,000 communities nationwide and boosts efforts to clean up polluted water supplies. EWG measures the pollution in people through biomonitoring research, testing for more than 500 chemicals in hundreds of volunteers nationwide, and proving that babies are born prepolluted with hundreds of industrial chemicals, pesticides, and pollutants. Using innovative research and strategic advocacy, EWG has helped get hazardous chemicals and products off the market - including the toxic pesticide dursban, arsenic-treated wooden decks and playsets, the synthetic hormone and food contaminant bpa, and toxic teflon chemicals - and products with less hazardous ingredients into people's homes. EWG's work supports national chemical policy reform to close the significant gaps in public health protections that our research reveals.
Activity 3
Natural Resources - EWG's unique data and geo-spatial analyses document the need for strong policies to protect public lands from hard rock mining, oil and gas production, and other extractive industries. EWG testified before the New York City Council Environmental Protection Committee on proposed natural gas drilling in the New York City watershed. Natural gas companies want to use a process called hydraulic fracturing, which involves injecting water laced with toxic chemicals into the ground. The technique threatens environmental health and the safety of public drinking water.

IRS990/Description0Water and Agriculture - EWG's innovative research and data analysis focus on the impacts of agriculture policy on water quality, climate change, economic opportunity and dietary well-being. EWG's campaign for equity in farm payment programs triggered 475 editorials from U.S. newspapers clamoring for reform of the farm subsidy system and changed the debate on government supports. EWG's farm subsidy database, with over 124 million searches since 2004, is used daily by policy makers, opinion leaders and advocates who continue to push for an overhaul of our misguided farm policy. EWG pushed back on the ethanol industry's attempt for billions more in subsidies and bailouts to keep expanding production of corn ethanol with all its unresolved environmental and social problems. Working with other like-minded organizations, EWG developed a detailed agenda for overhauling ethanol and biofuel subsidies and mandates as part of a comprehensive energy policy for the United States.
