Each director and officer is required to review a copy of the conflict of interest policy, which requires each person to disclose any relationships, position or circumstances in which he or she believes could contribute to a conflict. Following full disclosure of a possible conflict of interest, the Board of Directers determines whether a conflict of interest exists and, if so the Board votes to authorize or reject the transaction or take any other action deemed necessary to address the conflict and protect AALEAD's best interests.

The process for determining the Executive Director's compensation involves the completion by the entire board of a detailed evaluation and interviews of key staff and stakeholders. This performance assessment and review of market compensation data from similar organizations is then examined by an Executive Committee of the Board, which proposes a compensation level that must be approved by the entire board. Other employees' compensation is determined by the Executive Director with input and advice from the Board.

In FY21, due to COVID-19 and related school closures, youth participated in 100% virtual AALEAD after school program. Of the youth surveyed, 100% indicated overall satisfaction with AALEAD programs, 96% reported feeling more connected to a network of supportive peers, adults, and teachers; 92% reported learning how to take steps to achieve educational goals; and 92% reported feeling more comfortable sharing and celebrating their culture because of participating in AALEAD.

Youth presented projects during the Summer Showcase event including community interviews, performances exploring identity and empathy, and leadership presentations on community issues. Of youth surveyed about their experience in AALEAD Summer programs, 95% of youth reported improvement in empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, responsibility, and initiative skills because of participation in programs; 95% reported feeling more comfortable sharing and celebrating their culture; and 95% reported feeling more connected to their community.

AALEAD also provided 876 COVID-19 safety kits to the AAPI community, including elders and AAPI businesses, and also undertook social media and printed material distribution campaigns in multiple AAPI languages.

The summer leverages a youth-to-youth mentoring model where youth take ownership of their AALEAD Summer Program by being a part of the planning and facilitating the process. High School youth lead programming for middle school youth. In FY21, 61 youth were supported across the DC area in hybrid programs. Youth participated in both virtual and COVID-safe in-person program days exploring topics of identity, leadership, and community. See Schedule O for continuation

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0AAPI COVID-19 Response: During FY2021, AALEAD extended efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the AAPI community had culturally appropriate and in-language assistance to understand best practices when facing the pandemic and obtaining vaccinations. AALEAD engaged 397 youth and AAPI residents in-person, and 5,321 youth and AAPI residents virtually for COVID-19 vaccination education purposes. In addition, the AAPI community faced additional barriers from the pandemic including an increase in anti-AAPI hate, and responded accordingly by engaging 7,860 DC AAPI residents on "Stop Anti-AAPI Hate" initiatives and educational events.
