“Kalamazoo river institute in may, ijnr visited the beautiful and troubled kalamazoo river, site of the first-ever spill of canadian oil sands crude in the u.s. Between the 800,000 barrels of oil dumped into the river and a long history of dealing with pcbs from paper mill waste, the kalamazoo just may be america's most expensive river. The group stayed on the shores of gull lake at michigan state university's kellogg biological station and spent four days exploring all sorts of important and emerging issues. We toured experimental cash-crop fields, got briefed on clean up efforts at the epa's regional command center, and visited politically contentious superfund sites. Journalists hiked rare freshwater sand dunes where the kalamazoo meets lake michigan and an out-of-state billionaire wants to build a condo community. We coaxed both a state senator and high-ranking noaa official to be "captive" interviewees for a leisurely ride in a paddlewheel boat. And, of course, we canoed the kalamazoo. Coverage resulting from the trip appeared in outlets like the detroit free press, michigan public radio, and the tulsa world.”
“Crown of the continent institute in late june, ijnr traveled throughout western montana, traipsing across a veritable patchwork of land ownership and varied management practices to get a firsthand look at how collaboration is making a success story of the crown of the continent - and where collaborative efforts are falling short. The group learned about fire history from a peak alongside the national bison range; watched sparring parties from montana fish and wildlife, the confederated salish and kootenai tribes, and usgs duke it out over lake trout management in flathead lake; and strolled through grizzly habitat learning about the montana legacy project, one of the largest conservation land deals in the nation. Journalists learned about the intersection of traditional knowledge and western science at the native science field center on the blackfeet reservation, and hiked through the badger-two medicine, an area that is sacred to the blackfeet, is a critical conservation corridor, and is currently under consideration for oil and gas exploration. And, the group spent a full day in glacier national park, learning about climate science from the world's leading experts. Participating journalists have since produced stories for outlets such as rolling stone, high country news, aspen public radio, the helena independent record, the bozeman chronicle, boise state public radio, northwest news network, and others.”
“Mining country institute ijnr capped off 2013 by taking a look at a reemerging industry that's seemingly as old as the hills. Mining built the communities in michigan's upper peninsula. Today, new mine proposals have reenergized local officials, who dream of the economic booms of the past and concerned citizens who worried about the environmental impacts. Toward the end of august, journalists from the midwest, west coast and canada made their way to marquette, michigan for a five-day tour of mining country. The group descended into the earth to see what a state-of-the-art nickel mine looks like, then toured a turn-of-the-century "open-pit" iron mine that spanned a mile wide, a mile across and 1,200 feet deep. Journalists got up to speed on an emerging story, the proposed open pit mine in northern wisconsin's penokee hills, visiting a protest camp near the mine site, talking to homeowners concerned about the headwaters of a major river, and touring the sacred wild rice beds that ojibwe tribal members worry would be destroyed by mine waste. Of course, this being an ijnr trip, the group branched out to other subjects, discussing michigan's struggle to set fracking standards in place before the industry booms and going out howling for wolves with state wildlife managers. Stories emanating from the institute have since appeared in publications from outside magazine, to wisconsin public radio to environmental health news.”
“Ijnr has adopted a spending policy to determine appropriations each year based upon the appreciation of the assets held in the portfolio. The intent of the board is to retain 100% of donated assets within the fund portfolio as working capital. This is consistent with ijnr's objective to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets held in perpetuity or for a specified term as well as to provide additional real growth through new gifts and investment return.”

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 0 | MENTORING - MORE THAN 30 IJNR FELLOWS CURRENTLY SERVE AS VOLUNTEER MENTORS IN THE PROGRAM. ALL ARE HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED VETERANS WHO EXPRESS A SINCERE INTEREST IN HELPING OTHER JOURNALISTS TO IMPROVE. THE STAFF CAREFULLY PAIRS EACH MENTOR WITH ANOTHER IJNR FELLOW WHO HAS BEEN SELECTED TO BECOME A PROTEGE IN THE PROGRAM. EACH PAIR DEVELOPS ITS OWN DESCRIPTIVE GOALS AND PLANS. MOST PAIRS COMMUNICATE FREQUENTLY BY PHONE AND EMAIL. IJNR ALSO ENCOURAGES FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS WHEN PRACTICAL. AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR, THE PAIRS ARE ASKED TO REVISIT AND UPDATE THE GOALS AND TO ASSESS HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE. MENTORS EVALUATE THE QUALITY OF THEIR PROTEGE'S WORK BASED ON ACCURACY, FAIRNESS, RELEVANCE, CONTEXT, DEPTH, EFFECTIVENESS, AND SUBSTANCE. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 1 | MARKETING AND OUTREACH PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM INVOLVES RESEARCH EFFORTS AND IN-PERSON MEETINGS REGARDING PROGRAMS THAT IJNR MIGHT HOST TWO-TO-FOUR YEARS IN THE FUTURE. THIS PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES COSTS TO RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WEBSITE, E-NEWSLETTERS SENT TO FELLOWS, AND OTHER GENERAL PROGRAM-RELATED COMMUNICATIONS. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 2 | AGRICULTURE AND WATER-QUALITY WORKSHOP - AS PART OF IJNR'S LONG-TERM STRATEGY TO KEEP THEIR FELLOWS ENGAGED AND THEIR AUDIENCES INFORMED, THEY DECIDED THAT THEY NEED TO OFFER JOURNALISTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVISIT THE TOPICS THEY EXPLORE ON IJNR'S INSTITUTES -- LARGELY BECAUSE SO MANY ENVIRONMENT STORIES CONTINUE WELL AFTER THE INSTITUTES END. IJNR DETERMINED THAT THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD WOULD BE TO CONDUCT ONE-DAY "BOOT CAMPS" WITH A SERIES OF SPEAKERS WHO ARE WELL-POSITIONED TO UPDATE THE STORIES FOR THEIR JOURNALISTS. BECAUSE THERE HAD BEEN NUMEROUS INTERESTING DEVELOPMENTS ON LAKE ERIE SINCE THEY VISITED THE MAUMEE RIVER DURING 2012, THEY DECIDED TO FOCUS THIS FIRST INSTITUTE ON AGRICULTURE AND WATER QUALITY IN THE LAKE ERIE BASIN. THE JOYCE FOUNDATION WAS GENEROUS ENOUGH TO LET IJNR REDIRECT $10,000 IN FOUNDATION MONEY TO FUND THIS INITIATIVE. THIS FREE EVENT WAS ADVERTISED WIDELY, AND WAS OPEN TO ALL JOURNALISTS WORKING IN PRINT, BROADCAST AND ONLINE MEDIA. SPACE WAS LIMITED TO 40 PARTICIPANTS, AND UNLIKE THE APPLICATION-ONLY INSTITUTE MODEL, SPOTS WERE MADE AVAILABLE ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE BASIS. IJNR PROVIDED LODGING THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WORKSHOP FOR THOSE PARTICIPANTS THAT REQUIRED IT, AND BREAKFAST AND LUNCH WERE ALSO PROVIDED DURING THE WORKSHOP. TWENTY FOUR JOURNALISTS FROM AROUND THE GREAT LAKES REGION SIGNED UP FOR THE BOOT CAMP, ALTHOUGH ONLY 18 ENDED UP ATTENDING. PARTICIPATING JOURNALISTS HEARD FROM SCIENTISTS, POLICY MAKERS, INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES AND OTHERS, ABOUT NEW MODELING EFFORTS, PHOSPHORUS-REDUCTION PROGRAMS IN THE MAUMEE RIVER, THE STATE OF THE FISHERY AND OHIO'S RESPONSE TO THE PHOSPHORUS TASK FORCE'S SUMMER REPORT. JOURNALISTS ALSO HAD ACCESS TO EXPERTS AS THEY PRESENTED THE LATEST RESEARCH ON AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS, ALGAE BLOOMS AND WATER QUALITY.TOPICS COVERED DURING THE WORKSHOP INCLUDED:- THE IMPACT OF RAIN AND RUNOFF ON THE 2013 ALGAE SEASON. - HOW NOAA'S NEW MODELS CAN GATHER DATA IN THE SPRING TO PREDICT HOW THE ALGAE SEASON WILL UNFOLD IN LATE SUMMER. - HOW STATE REGULATORS RESPONDED TO THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE OHIO PHOSPHORUS TASK FORCE'S REPORT, WHICH WAS RELEASED SHORTLY BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. - INNOVATIVE WAYS TO MONITOR AND SLOW THE PHOSPHORUS RELEASE THAT'S LARGELY TO BLAME FOR ALGAE PROBLEMS IN LAKE ERIE AND WATER BODIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. - THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON LAKE ERIE. - HOW LONG-TERM, REPEATED HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS WILL AFFECT ECONOMIES AND ECOSYSTEMS THAT DEPEND ON GOOD WATER QUALITY.SPEAKERS INCLUDED: -JEFF REUTTER, THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY STONE LAB (LAKE ERIE OVERVIEW)-DAVE BAKER, HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY (STREAM MONITORING)-ED VERHAMME, LIMNOTECH (LAKE ERIE ALGAE MODEL)-SCOTT SWINTON, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY (THE ECONOMICS OF NONPOINT SOURCE POLLUTION)-BILL STANLEY, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY (WETLANDS FILTRATION/LAND USE STUDIES)-DOUG BUSDEKER, THE ANDERSONS (4RS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM)-STEVE DAVIS, NRCS (FEDERALLY FUNDED CONSERVATION INNOVATIONS)-GAIL HESSE, LAKE ERIE COMMISSION, AND KEVIN ELDER, OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (PHOSPHORUS REDUCTION TASK FORCE REPORT) |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 3 | ASSESSMENTS/RETREATS - IJNR HELD A STAFF RETREAT IN COMBINATION WITH ITS ANNUAL BOARD MEETING IN DECEMBER 2013 IN CHICAGO, IL. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR IJNR STAFF TO MEET TOGETHER IN PERSON FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE STAFF CHANGES IN JANUARY 2013. THEY DEVELOPED A WORKING DOCUMENT THAT OUTLINES IJNR'S CURRENT AND FUTURE GOALS, AND SPENT TIME DEVELOPING STAFF RELATIONSHIPS AS MOST OF THEIR COMMUNICATION OCCURS OVER THE PHONE AND VIA EMAIL. |
| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 4 | OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES - THESE EXPENSES REPRESENT RESIDUAL EXPENSES FROM PAST INSTITUTES AS WELL AS PROGRAMS IN THE PRELIMINARY STAGES OF PLANNING FOR 2014. |

THE INTENT OF THE BOARD IS TO RETAIN 100% OF DONATED ASSETS WITHIN THE FUND PORTFOLIO AS WORKING CAPITAL. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH IJNR'S OBJECTIVE TO MAINTAIN THE PURCHASING POWER OF THE ENDOWMENT ASSETS HELD IN PERPETUITY OR FOR A SPECIFIED TERM AS WELL AS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL REAL GROWTH THROUGH NEW GIFTS AND INVESTMENT RETURN. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | KALAMAZOO RIVER INSTITUTE IN MAY, IJNR VISITED THE BEAUTIFUL AND TROUBLED KALAMAZOO RIVER, SITE OF THE FIRST-EVER SPILL OF CANADIAN OIL SANDS CRUDE IN THE U.S. COVERAGE RESULTING FROM THE TRIP APPEARED IN OUTLETS LIKE THE DETROIT FREE PRESS, MICHIGAN PUBLIC RADIO, AND THE TULSA WORLD. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | CROWN OF THE CONTINENT INSTITUTE IN LATE JUNE, IJNR TRAVELED THROUGHOUT WESTERN MONTANA, TRAIPSING ACROSS A VERITABLE PATCHWORK OF LAND OWNERSHIP AND VARIED MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO GET A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT HOW COLLABORATION IS MAKING A SUCCESS STORY OF THE CROWN OF THE CONTINENT - AND WHERE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS ARE FALLING SHORT. PARTICIPATING JOURNALISTS HAVE SINCE PRODUCED STORIES FOR OUTLETS SUCH AS ROLLING STONE, HIGH COUNTRY NEWS, ASPEN PUBLIC RADIO, THE HELENA INDEPENDENT RECORD, THE BOZEMAN CHRONICLE, BOISE STATE PUBLIC RADIO, NORTHWEST NEWS NETWORK, AND OTHERS. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 2 | MINING COUNTRY INSTITUTE IJNR CAPPED OFF 2013 BY TAKING A LOOK AT A REEMERGING INDUSTRY THAT'S SEEMINGLY AS OLD AS THE HILLS. STORIES EMANATING FROM THE INSTITUTE HAVE SINCE APPEARED IN PUBLICATIONS FROM OUTSIDE MAGAZINE, TO WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO TO ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH NEWS. |
