IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0MENTORING - MORE THAN 30 IJNR FELLOWS CURRENTLY SERVE AS VOLUNTEER MENTORS IN THE PROGRAM. ALL ARE HIGHLY ACCOMPLISHED VETERANS WHO EXPRESS A SINCERE INTEREST IN HELPING OTHER JOURNALISTS TO IMPROVE. MOST PAIRS COMMUNICATE FREQUENTLY BY PHONE AND EMAIL. IJNR ALSO ENCOURAGES FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS WHEN PRACTICAL. AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR, THE PAIRS ARE ASKED TO REVISIT AND UPDATE THE GOALS AND TO ASSESS HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE. IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation0WISCONSIN WATERSHED INSTITUTE IJNR CONDUCTED THE 2012 WISCONSIN WATERSHEDS INSTITUTE (WWI) IN THE MILWAUKEE RIVER WATERSHED FROM APRIL 25TH THROUGH APRIL 28TH. THE PROGRAM WAS BASED IN MILWAUKEE FOR ITS DURATION, WITH DAY TRIPS TO SITES ALONG NOT ONLY MILWAUKEE'S NAMESAKE RIVER, BUT ALSO THE RECENTLY-REVITALIZED MENOMONEE AND STILL-STRUGGLING KINNICKINNIC. DURING THE FOUR-DAY EXPEDITION, PARTICIPANTS LEARNED ABOUT SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC-DEVELOPMENT AND LAND-USE ISSUES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF EXPERTS, USING RELEVANT SITES IN THE FIELD TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONTEXT AND COMPLEXITY. - THE GROUP TRAVERSED MILWAUKEE'S REVITALIZED MENOMONEE RIVER. AFTER ENGINEERING THE MENOMONEE INTO A STRAIGHT LINE TO FIT THE "GRID" OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT AS THE CITY GREW, MILWAUKEE HAS WORKED HARD TO RETURN THE RIVER TO A MORE "NATURAL" STATE TO SLOW AND RETAIN STORMWATER RUNOFF AND IMPROVE URBAN GREEN SPACE. THE MENOMONEE IS CONSIDERED A NATIONAL MODEL OF RIVER RESTORATION. THE GROUP WAS ACCOMPANIED ON THE TOUR BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE CITY, METROPOLITAN SEWAGE DISTRICT, REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS ALL PROVIDING INFORMATION AND FEEDBACK. - JOURNALISTS TOURED THE ALL-URBAN, CONCRETE-LINED KINNICKINNIC RIVER, STILL LISTED AS AN "ENDANGERED" WATERWAY AND NOW SITE OF AN AMBITIOUS CITY PROGRAM TO RELOCATE HOMEOWNERS AND CONVERT RESIDENTIAL AREAS INTO RESTORED FLOODPLAINS FOR STORM WATER MANAGEMENT. THE GROUP EXPLORED THE CHALLENGES OF CHANGING ZONING IN AREAS ALREADY DEVELOPED, AS WELL AS THE THORNY ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMPONENT OF MOVING LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS TO DIFFERENT NEIGHBORHOODS TO ACCOMMODATE FLOOD CONTROL PROJECTS. - REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF FRESHWATER SCIENCES AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN WATERSHEDS TRUST MET WITH THE GROUP TO TALK ABOUT AN INNOVATIVE NEW PROGRAM ATTEMPTING TO GET NEIGHBORING MUNICIPALITIES TO WORK TOGETHER ON WATERSHED-SCALE APPROACHES TO RUNOFF STRATEGIES. - JOURNALISTS GOT A FIRST-HAND LOOK AT THE SINGLE LARGEST SOURCE OF NUTRIENT POLLUTION TO WISCONSIN WATERWAYS DAIRY FARMS. BY MEETING FARMERS, RESOURCE MANAGERS AND DNR REGULATORS ON SITE AT BOTH A CONCENTRATED-ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATION (CAFO), AS WELL AS A SMALLER DAIRY OPERATION, THE GROUP WAS ABLE TO EXPLORE HOW THE DIFFERENCES IN REGULATION OF LARGE-SCALE AND SMALLER DAIRIES IMPACT WISCONSIN'S WATER QUALITY, AS WELL AS GET A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGIES AND BEST PRACTICES FARMERS ARE USING TO REDUCE THEIR FOOTPRINT IN THE WATERSHED. - THE GROUP MET WITH RESOURCE MANAGERS, FRESHWATER SCIENTISTS AND CONCERNED CITIZENS ON THE BANKS OF THE MILWAUKEE RIVER TO EXPLORE THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING DAM REMOVAL ON WISCONSIN RIVERS. MANY TOWNS AND VILLAGES GREW UP ALONG THE BANKS OF MAN-MADE RESERVOIRS AND BUSINESS AND HOMEOWNERS IN THESE TOWNS OFTEN RESIST THE PUSH TO OPEN RIVERS BACK UP TO A MORE NATURAL STATE TO IMPROVE FISH PASSAGE AND RESTORE ECOSYSTEMS. FURTHER COMPLICATING THE ISSUE, AFTER YEARS OF REMOVING DAMS, WISCONSIN'S DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES RECENTLY DID AN ABOUT-FACE AND HALTED DAM REMOVAL PERMITS OVER FEARS OF ENABLING INVASIVE SPECIES TO MOVE UPRIVER. - THE WISCONSIN WATERSHED INSTITUTE TURNED ITS ATTENTION TO A MORE AIR-BORNE ISSUE, AND MET WITH INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES AND CONCERNED COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS TO DISCUSS COMMUNITY HEALTH CONCERNS, ENERGY PRODUCTION REALITIES, THE RISE OF NATURAL GAS, AND THE PUSH TO PHASE OUT COAL POWER PLANTS OPERATING IN URBAN AREAS LIKE WE ENERGIE'S VALLEY POWER PLANT, WHICH STILL OPERATES IN THE MENOMONEE VALLEY. - THE GROUP EXPLORED THE PROMISES AND CHALLENGES OF URBAN AGRICULTURE AND AQUACULTURE, TAKING TOURS OF MILWAUKEE'S LANDMARK GROWING POWER, INC. A NATIONAL STANDARD-BEARER FOR THE URBAN AGRICULTURE MOVEMENT, AS WELL AS SWEETWATER ORGANICS, WHERE ENTREPRENEURIAL AQUACULTURISTS HAVE RE-PURPOSED AN OLD CRANE FACTORY IN INNER CITY MILWAUKEE AND ARE RAISING PRODUCE AND FISH FOR LOCAL AND REGI
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation1MAUMEE VALLEY INSTITUTE IJNR CONDUCTED THE 2012 MAUMEE VALLEY INSTITUTE (WWI) IN THE MAUMEE RIVER WATERSHED FROM JUNE 13TH TO THE 17TH. THE PROGRAM STARTED AND ENDED IN TOLDEO, OHIO, WITH A TRIP UPSTREAM TO VISIT THE HEADWATERS IN FORT WAYNE, INDIANA AND ANOTHER NIGHT NEAR SOME OF LAKE ERIE'S PRIME FISHING GROUNDS. DURING THE FOUR-DAY EXPEDITION, PARTICIPANTS DISCUSSED ENVIRONMENTAL, AGRICULTURAL AND ECONOMIC-DEVELOPMENT ISSUES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF EXPERTS, USING RELEVANT SITES IN THE FIELD TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONTEXT AND COMPLEXITY. - THE GROUP GOT AN OPENING NIGHT PRIMER ON HOW NUTRIENT POLLUTION AND SEDIMENT RUNOFF FROM THE MAUMEE RIVER PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN LAKE ERIE, ESPECIALLY THE ENTIRE WESTERN BASIN, FROM JEFF REUTTER, DIRECTOR OF OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY'S STONE LAB. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, THE GROUP DEPARTED FOR UPSTREAM REACHES OF THE MAUMEE, STOPPING AT STREAM MONITORING STATIONS, CORN, SOYBEAN AND DAIRY FARMS, WETLAND RESTORATION AREAS AND FIELDS FULL OF EXPERIMENTAL COVER CROPS TO TALK TO FARMERS, RESOURCE MANAGERS AND SCIENTISTS ABOUT BETTER MANAGING WHAT FLOWS INTO THE MAUMEE AND, EVENTUALLY, LAKE ERIE. - JOURNALISTS WERE ABLE TO SEE FIRST-HAND HOW INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES IN NO-TILL FARMING, PRECISION NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT AND DRAINAGE INFRASTRUCTURE ARE LEADING TO REDUCED FLOW AND BETTER WATER QUALITY. - THE EXPEDITION MET WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME, THE INDIANA DNR AND REGIONAL NON-PROFITS AT EAGLE MARSH IN FORT WAYNE, INDIANA TO SEE AND DISCUSS THE RECENTLY INSTALLED BARRIER THAT POLICYMAKERS, RESOURCE MANAGERS AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS ALL HOPE WILL PREVENT ASIAN CARP FROM TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE CONNECTION THE MARSH PROVIDES TO THE GREAT LAKES WATERSHED IN TIMES OF HIGH WATER. - JOURNALISTS WERE AFFORDED A "BACK-STAGE" TOUR OF THE WORKING DOCKS OF THE ANDERSON'S, INC. A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR AGRIBUSINESS FIRM THAT SHIPS GRAIN AND FERTILIZER ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES. REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, THE ANDERSONS, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY AND MORE WERE ALL ON HAND TO TALK ABOUT SHIPPING, AGRICULTURE AND THE HEALTH OF THE GREAT LAKES. - THE GROUP MET WITH THE DIRECTOR OF THE TOLEDO WATERWAYS INITIATIVE, A HALF-BILLION-DOLLAR PROJECT DESIGNED TO SEPARATE TOLEDO'S STORM SEWERS FROM ITS SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM, MANDATED BY A 2001 CONSENT DECREE BETWEEN TOLEDO AND THE OHIO EPA. THE GROUP THEN TOURED SITES OF ON-GOING CONSTRUCTION FOR THE INITIATIVE. - JOURNALISTS SPENT A MEMORABLE AFTERNOON GETTING TO KNOW SOME OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE MAYWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD, A LOW-INCOME, POLITICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED PART OF TOLEDO. MAYWOOD RESIDENTS USED TO SEE THEIR HOMES CONSISTENTLY FLOOD IN HEAVY STORMS, A NUISANCE THAT HAS NOW BEEN MITIGATED BY A PROTOTYPE GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE MODEL OF BIOSWALES, PERMEABLE SURFACES AND RAIN GARDENS. THE GROUP ALSO TOURED GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS AND A LARGE URBAN AGRICULTURE OPERATION IN NEARBY NEIGHBORHOODS. - THE TRIP TOOK JOURNALISTS OUT ON LAKE ERIE IN PURSUIT OF WALLEYE, PART OF THE LAKE'S MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR SPORTFISHING INDUSTRY. BY MEETING WITH CHARTER CAPTAINS AND TALKING ABOUT THE THREATS NUTRIENT POLLUTION, INVASIVE SPECIES AND HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS POSE TO LAKE ERIE'S FISHERY, JOURNALISTS GOT FIRST-HAND EXPOSURE TO WHAT, EXACTLY IS AT RISK. - THE TRIP CONCLUDED WITH A VISIT TO OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY'S STONE LAB, WHERE JOURNALISTS BOARDED A RESEARCH VESSEL TO LEARN ABOUT EVERYTHING FROM WATER CHEMISTRY TO PLANKTON POPULATIONS TO FISH COMMUNITIES. AFTER DECADES OF ECOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT, LAKE ERIE IS SHOWING SIGNS OF REGRESSION AND SCIENTISTS AT STONE LAB ARE AVIDLY FOLLOWING CHANGES TO THIS IMPORTANT BODY OF WATER AND DIAGNOSING THE CAUSES OF THIS DECLINE. - BEYOND IN THE FIELD PROGRAMMING, PARTICIPANTS IN THE MAUMEE RIVER WATERSHED WERE ALSO PART OF A "TELLING ENVIRONMENT STORIES BETTER" WORKSHOP LED BY IJNR PRESIDENT, FRANK ALLEN, AND PUBLIC RADIO REPORTER, KAREN SCHAEFER, AS THEY EXPLORED THE CHALLENGES OF CONVERTING BIG ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES TO SH
