Activity 2

Fire service program - to help reduce the number of firefighters who die in the line-of-duty. Delivered seven sessions of taking care of our own (tcooo) which was attended by 287 senior fire service officers and chaplains. The local assistance state teams (last) provided assistance with 76 firefighter fatalities, 14 ems fatalities, and 5 law enforcement fatalities . Last training was conducted in arizona, california, missouri and washington. The last trainings were attended by 123 senior fire officers. The foundation has partnered with the usfa and honeywell in an effort to create a vulnerability assessment tool for fire departments to evaluate their risk for having a firefighter line-of-duty death or significant injury. In 2012, the building phase of the vulnerability assessment program concluded. A full continuum of behavioral health programs were completed in 2012. The programs are a culmination of a four-year effort focusing on "firefighters and their families must have access to counseling and psychological support." the program, known as "stress first aid", has received interest internationally and meets the new nfpa 1500 standards. The nfff held a summit in march 2012 to determine what course of action fire departments should take to prepare for responses to violent incidents. The full report from the march meeting has been published and is listed on the life safety initiatives website.

Activity 3

National tribute - national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Each october, the foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Honored 80 firefighters who died in 2011 and 5 from previous years. Provided lodging, meals, and travel assistance to families. Hosted survivors who attenend the memorial weekend. Offered group sessions for survivors. Involved honor guard units and family escorts. Survivors from previous years returned to manage family registration and family day activities. More than 6,000 attended the national memorial service. Broadcasted the candlelight and memorial services live and streamed over the internet.
