Activity 2

LODD prevention program. To help reduce the number of firefighters who die in the line-of-duty. Delivered eight sessions of Taking Care of Our Own (TCOOO) which was attended by 268 senior fire service officers and chaplains, including two sessions to the wildland fire community. The Local Assistance State Teams (LAST) provided assistance with 59 firefighter fatalities in 25 states. LAST training was conducted in Fairbanks, Alaska; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and Charleston, West Virginia. The LAST trainings were attended by 41 senior fire officers. Held a Safety Summit in March 2010, with over 150 participants. The Foundation has partnered with the USFA and Honeywell in an effort to create a Vulnerability Assessment tool for fire departments to evaluate their risk for having a firefighter line-of-duty death or significant injury. The Foundation has been developing a searchable database containing listings of fire research, articles, and reports tied to the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives. The Foundation has completed a training program to follow up on its highly successful Courage to Be Safe. This compelling presentation examines the root causes of LODDs and the role of Leadership, Accountability, Culture and Knowledge (LACK) as it impacts the end result.

Activity 3

Other survivor programs. To provide support to fire service survivors. Sponsored the 5th annual Fire Service Survivors Conference in Schaumburg, Illinois With more than 120 attending. There are now 385 Network members from 45 states. 122 members sent 2,985 Rememberance cards to families on the anniversary of their loved one's death. Contacted newly bereaved families and provided emotional support. Survivors of 2010 fallen firefighters were carefully matched with Network members. Provided 331 grief brochures to survivors in ten states. Prepared and sent six issues of The Journey dealing with loss and survivor-to-survivor support - each issue was sent to more than 3,000 survivors. Awarded 86 scholarships to spouses, children, and stepchildren.
