Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

No committee has the authority to act on behalf of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The 990 is reviewed by the ceo and the treasurer and signed by the president & ceo once the tax returns are completed. The form 990, audited financials, and all financial statements are available to all members of the hispa board of directors and reviewed on a quarterly basis during board of directors meetings.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members are provided with the conflict of interest policy to review annually. If anyone has a conflict of interest, it is discussed by the board who then makes a decision as to the appropriate actions.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The board is responsible for reviewing the annual consulting contract of the ceo. The board reviews the form 990 of other non-profit organizations whose chief management officers have a similar scope of responsibilities and qualifications to use as a benchmark for assessing whether the compensation likely to be paid to the ceo under the contract is reasonable. There are no other officers or key employees of the organization.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The process has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and applicable state law. Income generated by activities that would be considered unrelated to the organization's mission would be subject to tax, which, if incurred, would be recognized as a current expense. No such tax has been recognized for the years ended june 30, 2025 and 2024. U.s. Gaap requires management to evaluate tax positions taken by the organization and recognize a tax liability if the organization has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. Management evaluated the organization's tax positions and concluded that the organization had taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance. The organization did not record any interest or penalties on uncertain tax positions in the accompanying statements of financial position as of june 30, 2025 and 2024, or in the accompanying statements of activities for the years then ended. If the organization were to incur any income tax liability in the future, interest on any income tax liability would be reported as interest expense and penalties on any income tax liability would be reported as income taxes.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Special events expense 48,635.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Special events expense 48,635.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0HISPA LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP SERIES: THE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP SERIES PROVIDES ACCESS TO LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, CAREER NETWORKS, AND ROLE MODELS TO THE COLLEGE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE LEADERS IN COLLEGE PROGRAM AND THE NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR'S HISPANIC FELLOWS PROGRAM, FUNDED BY THE CENTER FOR HISPANIC POLICY, RESEARCH, AND DEVELOPMENT. THESE STUDENTS VISIT LOCAL CORPORATE CAMPUSES FOR HISPA LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS, WHERE THEY ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES TO BUILD ESSENTIAL SKILLS, BOOST CONFIDENCE, AND EXPAND THEIR PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS. SIMILAR TO IMAGINE DAYS BUT TAILORED FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS, THESE WORKSHOPS ARE LED BY DIVERSE PROFESSIONALS WHO PROVIDE MENTORSHIP AND REAL-WORLD INSIGHT. THE EXPERIENCE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN THE WORKPLACE AND EXPLORE A WIDE RANGE OF CAREERS WITHIN THE HOST COMPANY. IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, EIGHT LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS HOSTED LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS FOR THE FELLOWS, AND FIVE HOSTED LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS FOR THE LEADERS IN COLLEGE. HISPA ENGAGED 133 VOLUNTEERS IN THE WORKSHOPS; THEY PARTICIPATED AS MENTORS AND SPEAKERS, PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TALKS, CONDUCTING MOCK INTERVIEWS, AND PROVIDING INVALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT DIVERSE CAREERS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0HISPA LEADERS IN COLLEGE: SOME COLLEGE STUDENTS FACE UNIQUE PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGES INCLUDING LESS ACCESS TO LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, CAREER NETWORKS, AND ROLE MODELSTHAT AFFECT THEIR FUTURE EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THROUGH A MIX OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS, DISCUSSIONS LED BY DIVERSE EXPERTS, AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, HISPA'S LEADERS IN COLLEGE PROGRAM HELPS COLLEGE STUDENTS, PREDOMINANTLY FROM EDUCATIONALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS, DEVELOP BOTH "HARD AND "SOFT" SKILLS TO HELP FOSTER ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS AND BUILD A NETWORK THAT LEADS TO INTERNSHIPS AND CAREERS. IN 2024-25, HISPA DELIVERED LEADERS IN COLLEGE WORKSHOPS TO 192 STUDENTS AT MERCER COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, THE NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, PASSAIC COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND RIDER UNIVERSITY. HISPA ENGAGED 22 VOLUNTEERS WHO PARTICIPATED AS PANELISTS AND MENTORS. HISPA ROLE MODEL ENGAGEMENT AND TRAINING: IN 2024-25, HISPA TRAINED 546 VOLUNTEERS FROM THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS THROUGH A FORMAL ONBOARDING PROCESS THAT INCLUDED ORIENTATION AND TRAINING.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0LETTERWRITING & MY CAREER: STEP-BY-STEP: HISPA'S LETTERING CAMPAIGN ENGAGES VOLUNTEERS TO WRITE ENCOURAGING LETTERS TO UPLIFT STUDENTS WHO MAY FACE BARRIERS TO SUCCESS. THESE LETTERS LET STUDENTS KNOW THAT ADULTS HAVE GONE THROUGH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES AND PERSEVERED. KNOWING THAT SOMEONE BELIEVES IN THEM MOTIVATES STUDENTS TO PERSEVERE AND PURSUE THEIR ACADEMIC AND CAREER ASPIRATIONS. WITH "MY CAREER: STEP-BY-STEP," VOLUNTEERS COMPLETE A ONE-PAGE TEMPLATE INTRODUCING THEIR CAREERS AND THE SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES AND MILESTONES FROM MIDDLE SCHOOLS THROUGH COLLEGE THAT ALLOWED THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR FIELDS. THIS TEMPLATE PROVIDES GREATER EXPOSURE AND ACCESS TO COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS INFORMATION THAT MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE FROM OTHER SOURCES. BOTH PROGRAMS TARGET LOW-INCOME YOUTH IN GRADES 6 TO 9, MANY OF WHOM WOULD BE THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILIES TO GO TO COLLEGE. OVER 700 LETTERS AND MY CAREER: STEP-BY-STEP WERE COLLECTED IN 2024-25.
