IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0GRANTS FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH ON PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DIABETES ARE PROVIDED TO RESEARCHERS AT UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH CENTERS ACROSS THE U.S. WITH A FOCUS ON NUTRITIONAL RESEARCH THAT CAN IMPROVE THE LIVES OF 26 MILLION PEOPLE LIVING WITH DIABETES IN THE U.S. ONE OF THE 19 GRANTS PROVIDED IN 2014 WAS A GRANT TO MT.SINAI MEDICAL SCHOOL WHERE DR. MOBBS IS SHOWING THAT A KETOGENIC DIET CAN REVERSE SYMPTOMS OF NEUROPATHY, WHICH AFFECTS 60 TO 70% OF ALL PEOPLE WITH DIABETES. THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH COULD NOT ONLY RELIEVE THE PAIN AND SUFFERING FOR MILLIONS OF DIABETICS, BUT ALSO PROVIDE A HUGE REDUCTION IN US HEALTHCARE COSTS. SIMILARLY, A STUDY WE ARE FUNDING AT MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL IS SHOWING THAT A GENERIC DRUG CAN REVERSE TYPE 1 DIABETES. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY COULD HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON FUTURE TREATMENT OF THIS DEVASTATING DISEASE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0BECAUSE THE EPIDEMIC OF DIABETES IS ALSO CAUSING A HUGE INCREASE IN BOTH TYPE 1 AND 2 DIABETES AMONG CHILDREN, OUR SUPPORT OF SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS IN ALL 50 STATES IS CRUCIAL TO MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR CHILDREN WHO NEED FINANCIAL HELP TO ATTEND THESE SPECIAL CAMP PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN WITH DIABETES. THESE PROGRAMS NURTURE SELF ESTEEM AND SELF RELIANCE BY OFFERING A SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE IN ANY OTHER SETTING. FOR MANY CHILDREN WITH DIABETES THESE CAMPS PROVIDE THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THEY DONT FEEL DIFFERENT AND PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM POTENTIAL ROLE MODELS AND PEERS. AS ONE CHILD WROTE IN HIS THANK YOU NOTE, BEING AT CAMP GAVE ME CONFIDENCE TO TAKE CARE OF MY DIABETES MORE ON MY OWNTHANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THE CHANCE TO AFFORD CAMP.
