Mission
To promote the development of hydropower as a clean, renewable, and reliable form of energy. National hydro association (nha) set a vision to double the current contribution of hydropower to the energy mix.nha continues to press for policies that recognize the industry's overall environmental benefit, including the 225 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions that it helps avoid each year. Nha seeks renewable energy bonus allowance programs, credit parity, regulatory improvements, research and development dollars, and other policies that reflect the industry's energy and environmental contributions and address the challenges to development.nha works closely with the federal energy regulatory commission (ferc), resource agencies, and other regulators and stakeholders to represent the industry's position in all issues.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Public affairsnha acts as both a vehicle for conveying the industry's messages to key audiences and as a national clearinghouse for information about hydropower and related energy issues. In consultation with the public affairs committee, the organization also develops integrated messages, tools and support pieces that communicate to target audiences. | IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 4 | GENERAL OVERVIEW OF REGIONAL MEETINGS FOR 2012:MIDWEST: HELD MAY 16-17, 2012 IN GREEN BAY, WIALASKA& DOI/FERC WORKSHOP: HELD AUGUST 21 -23, 2012 IN SITKA, ALASKASOUTHEAST: HELD SEPTEMBER 1213, 2012 IN CHARLESTON, WVNORTHWEST: HELD OCTOBER 17-18, 2012 IN BOISE, ID THE REGIONAL MEETING INITIATIVE BEGAN AS A PILOT PROGRAM IN 2005 AND HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND EXPAND INTO A POPULAR NHA OUTREACH PROGRAM. MEETINGS ARE ORGANIZED AROUND AN ESTABLISHED TEMPLATE WHICH INCLUDES SENIOR NHA STAFF PRESENTERS, ROUNDTABLES ON SUBJECTS OF REGIONAL INTEREST, AND OFTEN A FERC OR OTHER KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOLLOWED BY A DIALOGUE WITH THE AUDIENCE. TYPICALLY ATTENDANCE HAS INCREASED EVERY YEAR. AS OF THE DATE OF THIS REPORT ATTENDANCE GENERALLY IS IN THE RANGE OF 90-100 PERSONS AND FREQUENTLY EXCEEDS THOSE NUMBERS. FEEDBACK FROM ATTENDEES IS CONSISTENTLY VERY FAVORABLE AND ALSO HELPFUL IN FOCUSING MEETING CONTENT ON APPROPRIATE REGIONAL INTERESTS AND PRIORITIES. BASED ON SURVEY FEEDBACK, WE ARE REACHING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT NHA MEMBERS (OR ARE NOT ACTIVE NHA MEMBERS). THERE IS ALSO WIDESPREAD AND GENUINE INTEREST IN CONTINUING THE PROGRAM WITH NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. EVIDENCE OF THIS WIDESPREAD AND GENUINE INTEREST IS THE FACT THAT MOST REGIONS REQUEST MEETINGS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS. |

| IRS990/Description | 0 | LEGISLATIVE PROGRAMECONOMIC GROWTH:NHA MEMBERS CONTINUE TO REPORT THAT THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. FROM THE NEWEST START-UPS TO FORTUNE 500 CORPORATIONS, HYDROPOWER COMPANIES ARE HIRING, GROWING, AND LOOKING AT NEW PROJECTS. THIS IS THE MESSAGE THE ORGANIZATION HAS TAKEN TO CONGRESS AND THE ADMINISTRATION, WHERE IT IS FINDING GROWING SUPPORT FOR POLICIES THAT WILL HELP ITS INDUSTRY CONTINUE TO EXPAND AND DELIVER JOBS, INVESTMENT, AND RESOURCES TO ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY:BY COMMUNICATING AND WORKING WITH THE ADMINISTRATION, NHA HAS BEEN ABLE TO CRAFT STRATEGIES AND POSITIONS THAT RESPOND TO NEW NATIONAL PUBLIC POLICIES. LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS THAT ADDRESS ENERGY ARE BEGINNING TO REFLECT HYDROPOWER'S IMPORTANCE AS A RENEWABLE RESOURCE. THE HOUSE PASSED LEGISLATION TO STREAMLINING THE PERMITTING OF PROJECTS THAT COULD CONVERT NON-POWERED DAMS INTO CLEAN-ENERGY RESOURCES. WITH ONLY 3 PERCENT OF THE COUNTRY'S 78,000 DAMS CURRENTLY GENERATING ELECTRICITY, NHA IS STRONGLY ADVOCATING FOR THIS PROVISION. THE SENATE IS EXPECTED TO PASS THIS LEGISLATION OVER THE SUMMER. NHA ALSO CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE FOR TAX MEASURES THAT PROVIDED PARITY FOR HYDRO AND INCLUSION OF PUMPED STORAGE IN TAX INCENTIVES; AND WAS SUCCESSFUL IN JANUARY OF 2013 TO SECURE A CHANGE IN THE PRODUCTION TAX CREDIT THAT ADDRESSES SOME OF THE ISSUES OF THE LONG LEAD TIME IN HYDROPOWER DEVELOPMENT THAT MAKE APPLICATION OF THE TAX CREDIT TO HYDRO PROJECTS PROBLEMATIC. NHA WILL CONTINUE TO STAY ENGAGED ON RENEWABLE ENERGY TAX ISSUES AS THE CONGRESS CONSIDERS OVERHAULING THE TAX CODE. THE ASSOCIATION WILL ALSO BE WORKING WITH CONGRESS ON ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE TO IMPROVE THE PERMITTING OF HYDRO FACILITIES, PARTICULARLY LOW IMPACT PROJECTS AND THOSE BUILT ON THE FEDERAL SYSTEM, SUCH AS THE CORP OF ENGINEER FACILITIES, THAT ARE CURRENTLY NON-POWERED.NATIONAL ADVOCACY:AS THE NATIONAL VOICE OF THE HYDROPOWER INDUSTRY, NHA ADVOCATES FOR SOUND ENERGY POLICIES IN CONGRESS AND BUILDS ALLIANCES WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT KEY ISSUES. |
