Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To promote the development of hydropower as a clean, renewable, and reliable form of energy. National hydro association (nha) set a vision to double the current contribution of hydropower to the energy mix.nha continues to press for policies that recognize the industry's overall environmental benefit, including the 225 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions that it helps avoid each year. Nha seeks renewable energy bonus allowance programs, credit parity, regulatory improvements, research and development dollars, and other policies that reflect the industry's energy and environmental contributions and address the challenges to development.nha works closely with the federal energy regulatory commission (ferc), resource agencies, and other regulators and stakeholders to represent the industry's position in all issues.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Public affairsnha acts as both a vehicle for conveying the industry's messages to key audiences and as a national clearinghouse for information about hydropower and related energy issues. In consultation with the public affairs committee, the organization also develops integrated messages, tools and support pieces that communicate to target audiences. Key areas of activities include:medianha works with reporters, producers, and editors continuously to provide the industry's perspective and shape national and regional stories. In addition to national media work, nha responds to dozens of inquiries from trade and local media.member supportnha works closely with members to create opportunity for regional and local media attention and to support individual member outreach efforts. Statements and press releasesnha issues several statements and news releases every month providing the industry's perspective on critical policy developments and highlighting key developments in hydropower.strategic communication toolsnha prepares targeted communications tools for its audiences, such as messaging papers, backgrounders for media, fact sheets for the public and special presentations for external audiences, such as the hydropower caucus. Nha launched it s u.s. Hydro suppliers snapshot, an integrated map with 2500 data points of supply companies that depend on vibrant hydro industry, and continues to build on it with additional data.online presencenha continues to expand and develop its web presence. The association continues to maintain two special features on its site, a news feed from around the world and nha's capwiz interactive policy tool allows members to send messages to their congressional representatives, track legislation, and follow issues on capitol hill. These enhancements are part of nha's ongoing work to make hydro.org the most complete, effective hydropower resource on the web.
Activity 3
Conferences & meetingsnha is building support for hydropower on a regional basis. The regional meetings committee conducted four events in different parts of the country this year to bring nha's benefits and networking opportunities to members and potential members. These events will help build nha's national profile, as well as increasing the exposure all industry employees have to the association. Nha also sponsored an annual conference. Our annual conference attracted nearly 600 industry members. Our special workshops average about 100 members each year.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROPOWER AS A CLEAN, RENEWABLE, AND RELIABLE FORM OF ENERGY. NHA HAS SET A VISION TO DOUBLE THE CURRENT CONTRIBUTION OF HYDROPOWER TO THE ENERGY MIX.THE ORGANIZATION CONTINUES TO PRESS FOR POLICIES THAT RECOGNIZE THE INDUSTRY'S OVERALL ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT, INCLUDING THE 225 MILLION METRIC TONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS THAT IT HELPS AVOID EACH YEAR.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0MEMBERSHIPS:NHA WORKS CLOSELY WITH MEMBERS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITY FOR REGIONAL AND LOCAL MEDIA ATTENTION AND TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUAL MEMBER OUTREACH EFFORTS. THIS STRENGTHENS NHA'S NATIONAL PROFILE AND KEEPS THE ASSOCIATION FOCUSED ON NATIONAL POLICY ISSUES, WHILE BOLSTERING ITS MEMBERS' PROFILES AND DEMONSTRATING THE RANGE OF PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1TECHNOLOGY:NHA'S TECHNOLOGIES COUNCIL WORKS ON LICENSING AND SITE ISSUES FOR HYDROKINETICS. THE COUNCIL MONITORED THE DEVELOPMENT OF MMS REGULATIONS ON DEVELOPING PROJECTS OFFSHORE.HYDRAULIC POWER COMMITTEE PROGRAM (HPC):THE PROGRAM GIVES MEMBERS A FORUM FOR SHARING BEST PRACTICES, REVIEWING OPERATIONAL ISSUES, AND EXPLORING WAYS TO IMPROVE THE INDUSTRY'S TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES. THE ELECTRIC POWER RESEARCH INSTITUTE (EPRI) ESTIMATED THAT A TOTAL FEDERAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INVESTMENT OF $377 MILLION BETWEEN 2007 AND 2015 COULD INCREASE U.S. HYDROPOWER CAPACITY BY ALMOST 25 PERCENT. ARMED WITH THIS ESTIMATE, NHA SET OUT TO SECURE MORE FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HYDRO RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. NHA HAS ALREADY STARTED TO SEE THE FRUITS OF THE EFFORT. THIS YEAR'S CR MAINTAINED THE PROGRAM AT $59 MILLION FOR THE DOE WATERPOWER PROGRAM. NHA WILL BE WORKING CLOSELY WITH ITS MEMBERS AND DOE TO PROPOSE ACTIVITIES THAT CAN ENSURE THAT EVERY FEDERAL DOLLAR GOES TOWARD PROJECTS THAT WILL EXTEND HYDROPOWER'S BENEFITS FURTHER.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2CEO COUNCIL:IN 2009, THE ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED A CEO COUNCIL TO PROVIDE STRATEGIC ADVICE TO THE NHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND AID IN OUR ADVOCACY WORK. TODAY, NEARLY 30 CEO'S FROM MEMBER COMPANIES AROUND THE COUNTRY PARTICIPATE IN THE COUNCIL AND ITS WORK. THE COUNCIL MEETS TWICE EACH YEAR; ONCE IN THE FALL AND AGAIN IN THE SPRING.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3HRF:NHA CONTINUES TO PROVIDE IN-KIND MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT TO THE HYDRO RESEARCH FOUNDATION (HRF) IN MANAGING THEIR $3 MILLION GRANT AWARD FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY. A LARGE PART OF THE YEAR WAS FOCUSED ON TRANSITIONING THE HRF FROM ITS VOLUNTARY ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT TO ESTABLISHING THE FOUNDATION WITH A PAID PROFESSIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AND RELOCATED THE FOUNDATION TO COLORADO. THE TRANSITION WAS COMPLETE IN THE FALL OF 2012.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description4GENERAL OVERVIEW OF REGIONAL MEETINGS FOR 2012:MIDWEST: HELD MAY 16-17, 2012 IN GREEN BAY, WIALASKA& DOI/FERC WORKSHOP: HELD AUGUST 21 -23, 2012 IN SITKA, ALASKASOUTHEAST: HELD SEPTEMBER 1213, 2012 IN CHARLESTON, WVNORTHWEST: HELD OCTOBER 17-18, 2012 IN BOISE, ID THE REGIONAL MEETING INITIATIVE BEGAN AS A PILOT PROGRAM IN 2005 AND HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND EXPAND INTO A POPULAR NHA OUTREACH PROGRAM. MEETINGS ARE ORGANIZED AROUND AN ESTABLISHED TEMPLATE WHICH INCLUDES SENIOR NHA STAFF PRESENTERS, ROUNDTABLES ON SUBJECTS OF REGIONAL INTEREST, AND OFTEN A FERC OR OTHER KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOLLOWED BY A DIALOGUE WITH THE AUDIENCE. TYPICALLY ATTENDANCE HAS INCREASED EVERY YEAR. AS OF THE DATE OF THIS REPORT ATTENDANCE GENERALLY IS IN THE RANGE OF 90-100 PERSONS AND FREQUENTLY EXCEEDS THOSE NUMBERS. FEEDBACK FROM ATTENDEES IS CONSISTENTLY VERY FAVORABLE AND ALSO HELPFUL IN FOCUSING MEETING CONTENT ON APPROPRIATE REGIONAL INTERESTS AND PRIORITIES. BASED ON SURVEY FEEDBACK, WE ARE REACHING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT NHA MEMBERS (OR ARE NOT ACTIVE NHA MEMBERS). THERE IS ALSO WIDESPREAD AND GENUINE INTEREST IN CONTINUING THE PROGRAM WITH NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. EVIDENCE OF THIS WIDESPREAD AND GENUINE INTEREST IS THE FACT THAT MOST REGIONS REQUEST MEETINGS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS.

IRS990/Description0LEGISLATIVE PROGRAMECONOMIC GROWTH:NHA MEMBERS CONTINUE TO REPORT THAT THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. FROM THE NEWEST START-UPS TO FORTUNE 500 CORPORATIONS, HYDROPOWER COMPANIES ARE HIRING, GROWING, AND LOOKING AT NEW PROJECTS. THIS IS THE MESSAGE THE ORGANIZATION HAS TAKEN TO CONGRESS AND THE ADMINISTRATION, WHERE IT IS FINDING GROWING SUPPORT FOR POLICIES THAT WILL HELP ITS INDUSTRY CONTINUE TO EXPAND AND DELIVER JOBS, INVESTMENT, AND RESOURCES TO ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY:BY COMMUNICATING AND WORKING WITH THE ADMINISTRATION, NHA HAS BEEN ABLE TO CRAFT STRATEGIES AND POSITIONS THAT RESPOND TO NEW NATIONAL PUBLIC POLICIES. LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS THAT ADDRESS ENERGY ARE BEGINNING TO REFLECT HYDROPOWER'S IMPORTANCE AS A RENEWABLE RESOURCE. THE HOUSE PASSED LEGISLATION TO STREAMLINING THE PERMITTING OF PROJECTS THAT COULD CONVERT NON-POWERED DAMS INTO CLEAN-ENERGY RESOURCES. WITH ONLY 3 PERCENT OF THE COUNTRY'S 78,000 DAMS CURRENTLY GENERATING ELECTRICITY, NHA IS STRONGLY ADVOCATING FOR THIS PROVISION. THE SENATE IS EXPECTED TO PASS THIS LEGISLATION OVER THE SUMMER. NHA ALSO CONTINUES TO ADVOCATE FOR TAX MEASURES THAT PROVIDED PARITY FOR HYDRO AND INCLUSION OF PUMPED STORAGE IN TAX INCENTIVES; AND WAS SUCCESSFUL IN JANUARY OF 2013 TO SECURE A CHANGE IN THE PRODUCTION TAX CREDIT THAT ADDRESSES SOME OF THE ISSUES OF THE LONG LEAD TIME IN HYDROPOWER DEVELOPMENT THAT MAKE APPLICATION OF THE TAX CREDIT TO HYDRO PROJECTS PROBLEMATIC. NHA WILL CONTINUE TO STAY ENGAGED ON RENEWABLE ENERGY TAX ISSUES AS THE CONGRESS CONSIDERS OVERHAULING THE TAX CODE. THE ASSOCIATION WILL ALSO BE WORKING WITH CONGRESS ON ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE TO IMPROVE THE PERMITTING OF HYDRO FACILITIES, PARTICULARLY LOW IMPACT PROJECTS AND THOSE BUILT ON THE FEDERAL SYSTEM, SUCH AS THE CORP OF ENGINEER FACILITIES, THAT ARE CURRENTLY NON-POWERED.NATIONAL ADVOCACY:AS THE NATIONAL VOICE OF THE HYDROPOWER INDUSTRY, NHA ADVOCATES FOR SOUND ENERGY POLICIES IN CONGRESS AND BUILDS ALLIANCES WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT KEY ISSUES.
