Mission

The League shall:a. Actively seek opportunities to stimulate and promote awareness, by all elements of American society, of the need for a strong undersea arm of the United States Navy.b. Encourage mutual understanding and a close working relationship between American society and those segments of the United States government responsible for the acquisition and employment of submarines for the common defense and national security.c. Provide a forum on professional matters affecting the Submarine Force and its integral role in national security whereby: the views and perceptions of League members can be focused and expounded, and diverse elements of industry, academia, and government can be brought together to identify, study, and develop potential solutions to undersea warfare challenges.d. Promote greater liaison and communications among government, academic, and business communities to further understanding and appreciation of the past, present, and future contributions of the Submar

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: All Other AccomplishmentsThe NSL held its 30th Submarine Technology Symposium, a classified (SECRET/NOFORN) three-day conference on 9-11 May 2017 on the campus of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. An audience of over 500 attended to participate in technical presentations, exhibits, and discussions. The conference enables collaboration among industry, academia, and government to expand undersea capabilities.The Chairman of the NSL Board of Directors, ADM Kirk Donald, USN, Ret. delivered the opening remarks and the Commander of Submarine Forces, VADM Joseph Tofalo, delivered the first keynote speech. Other notable speakers included RADM Fritz Roegge, RADM Bill Merz, VADM Terry Benedict, VADM James Foggo III, VADM Rick Breckenridge, RADM Michael Jabaley, and Ron ORourke or the Congressional Research Service.On 31 October 2017 the NSL held a history seminar The Hunt for Red October Fact and Fiction. This open-to-the-public event consisted of a panel discussion of the role of submarines in the Cold War and the movie that showed it to the world. The panel was made up of CAPT David C. Minton, III, USN, Ret.; RADM David R. Oliver, Jr., USN, Ret; ADM Thomas D. Fargo, USN, Ret.; and Mr. Mace Neufeld. It was moderated by Dr. David A. Rosenberg, Ph.D., the NSL History Seminar Chairperson.For 27 days in 1972, USS Guardfish (SSN612) tracked a Soviet submarine from Vladivostok to the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam. This mission was declassified in 1999. In 1990, with the cooperation of the U.S. Navy, The Hunt for Red October was produced, bringing Tom Clancys dramatic story of the cat-and-mouse life of the Silent Service to the screen.
