Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Community, family, child and transitional age youth centered treatment and development programs to ameliorate effects of trauma and support wellbeing, resiliency and psychosocial success of those served in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Participation with residents and professionals in building collaborative community capacity to respond with prevention and intervention services is our goal. Foster parents, unpaid tutors' mentors, full time agency staff, multi-disciplinary interns participate in our agency efforts to provide services and support to youth and families.

MPP provides foster care, independent living, tutoring and mentoring, and other family-centered youth development and support programs to children and youth in Maryland and the District of Columbia with the broader goal of building a caring community for every young person who needs support beyond what can be provided by his or her family. We believe that mobilizing community members as volunteers, foster parents, staff and donors is key to ensuring that young people we serve receive the support they need to succeed.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The board of directors assumes responsibility for the audit of the financial statements and selection of the independent auditor. The finance committee assumes responsibility for the oversight of the audit. This process has not changed from the prior year.

Amended 990

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The martin pollak project, inc follows the guidance of asc 740-10, "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes" which clarifies the accounting for the recognition and measurement of the benefits of individual tax positions in the financial statements, including those of nonprofit organizations. Tax positions must meet a recognition threshold of more-likely-than-not in order for the benefit of those tax positions to be recognized in the organization's financial statements. The organization has analyzed tax positions taken, including those related to the requirements set forth in irc sec 501(c) to qualify as a tax exempt organization, activities performed by volunteers and board members, the reporting of unrelated business income, and its status as tax-exempt organization under maryland state statute. The organization does not know of any tax benefits arising from uncertain tax positions and there was no effect on the organization's financial position or changes in net assets as a result of analyzing its tax positions. Fiscal years ending on or after june 30, 2014 remain subject to examination by federal and state authorities.

IRS990/MissionDesc0MPP provides foster care, independent living, tutoring and mentoring, and other family-centered youth development and support programs to children and youth in Maryland and the District of Columbia with the broader goal of building a caring community for every young person who needs support beyond what can be provided by his or her family. We believe that mobilizing community members as volunteers, foster parents, staff and donors is key to ensuring that young people we serve receive the support they need to succeed.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0ILP Independent LivingThe MPP Independent Living program supports young men and women between the ages of 16 and 21 who are transitioning from foster care. We provide housing, mental health and other support services, and a safe haven to help these youth work toward self-sufficiency as they finish their schooling, enter the workforce, or develop the vocational and life skills they need for successful careers. In addition, we have added enhanced support for LGBTQ youth. We served an average of 18 youth monthly in the program. 85% were Baltimore City residents.During the reporting period, 9 youth obtained GEDs, 3 attended high school, 2 attended college, 4 completed some college, 9 had full-time employment, 2 were actively interviewing for jobs, and 2 obtained learners permits.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Northstar Baltimore (NB) became fully operational this school year, with weekly tutoring sessions in three locations in Highlandtown one at MPP offices and two at our community school partners in Highlandtown and Greektown. We serve about 30 students each week, who are matched with their own volunteer tutors with a focus on individualized math and language assignments. Each month there is a mentoring activity to further develop the relationship between students and mentors. NB received a two-year commitment from Strong City Baltimore to provide a VISTA volunteer, which has allowed us to increase outreach to volunteers, community groups, and financial supporters and ensure sustainability of the program.
