Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1:

The Studio Theatre is dedicated to producing the best in contemporary theatre. Our restless, innovative spirit generates an uncommonly rich and diverse body of work, encompassing provocative new writing from around the world, unique special events, and inventive stagings of contemporary classics. Devoted above all to artistic excellence, the Studio Theatre strives to present audiences with extraordinary writing, sophisticated design, and stunning performance. Our commitment to connecting actors and audience is built into the very architecture of our building, where none of our four performance spaces seats more than 225 patrons. No theatre of comparable budget size operates such exclusively intimate spaces. The Studio Theatre is also committed to nurturing future generations of theatre professionals. Toward this end, we offer rigorous theatre training for both adults and young people through the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory, provide year-long apprenticeships for early-career arts leaders, and involve emerging talent in the creation of our work. We believe in accessibility and inclusion, and open our doors to students and audiences across the region through a wide variety of outreach programs. A premiere cultural organization in Washington DC, the Studio Theatre is proud to make a vital contribution to our neighborhood and city.

IRS990/MissionDesc0As Studio Theatre nears our fourth decade, Artistic Director David Muse, Managing Director Meridith Burkus, and our Board of Trustees recently renewed Studio's mission as a part of a longterm strategic planning process. Our mission now includes the animating purpose for our commitment to producing the best in contemporary theatre: "Studio Theatre produces exceptional contemporary theatre in deliberately intimate spaces, fostering a more thoughtful, more empathetic, and more connected community, in Washington DC and beyond." We remain committed to the contemporary plays and physical spaces that have defined our audience's experience for 38 years, rooting ourselves in our community, while embracing our role as an industry leader and model for innovation, engagement, training, and the development of significant new work. Whether laughing together or untangling complex issues of the day, Studio Theatre is a catalyst that unites our disparate audiences into a community.
