Mission

Reading is fundamental works to disrupt the alarming u.s. Literacy crisis by inspiring the joy of reading in children, a critical element to driving the frequency, motivation, and engagement needed to create skilled readers. We know that if we build a foundation of joy for children, then development, discovery, and opportunity follow.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Corporate Projects: RIF conducts multi disciplinary major projects that are tailored to the specific needs of individual communities. These projects combine distribution of books to children similar to the BFO service along with elements of other RIF program services. A multi-disciplinary project is usually funded by a single donor.

Literacy Services: RIF's literacy services include both Family Literacy and Community Education. Family Literacy activities are designed to help parents take a leading role in encouraging their children's literacy development. With the guidance of RIF volunteers, parents participate in workshops, create and implement activities to enhance literacy development, and attend family literacy nights. Certain Family Literacy programs and activities specifically target teenage parents.RIF conducts community training programs for professionals in the early childhood community. This training is designed to support children's emergent literacy skills. The training is done through a "train the trainer" model that prepares participants to return to their communities and deliver the training to their colleagues and communities.

IRS990/Description0Books for Ownership: RIF's largest program service is Books for Ownership (BFO). A "local RIF program" that operates the BFO service conducts between two and five book distributions per year where the participating children each select a book to keep. Each book distribution also includes motivational activities designed to encourage the participating children to read for pleasure.Most "local RIF programs" that conduct the BFO service receive funds from RIF's "Inexpensive Book Distribution Program (IBDP)" contract with the U.S. Department of Education (Education). RIF has contracted with Education to operate the IBDP since 1976. Under the IBDP, individual local RIF programs order inexpensive books from a list of approximately 140 approved book suppliers. Each local RIF program receives the books it orders, along with an invoice, directly from suppliers. The local program submits the invoice to RIF along with a contractually specified amount of locally raised funds. RIF then forwards the locally raised funds, along with amounts drawn from federal funds for the balance of the invoice amount, to the book supplier.RIF also receives contributions from non-government donors to fund the BFO service at local RIF programs.

Founded in 1966, RIF motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.3 million children with 15.3 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.
