Activity 2

Public education and communications: special olympics is committed to public awareness of intellectual disabilities and means to address barriers that persons with intellectual disabilities face. Our awareness campaigns extend to include "spread the word to end the word" activities throughout the united states and globally with an annual campaign day and ongoing communications via the internet and social media sites. Public awareness activities also include project unify-a collaboration between special olympics and school communities throughout the united states aimed at helping young people with and without intellectual disabilities to promote attitudes and behaviors of acceptance and inclusion. Special olympics embarked upon a brand alignment project which resulted in brand architecture, brand model and refreshed brand visual identity. 2011 was the 30th anniversary of the law enforcement torch run for special olympics which is the largest grassroots fundraiser for special olympics, raising nearly $43 million for the movement during the 2010-2011 period.

Activity 3

Sports training and competition: in 2011, the special olympics movement grew to providing more than 53,000 competitions around the world in the year, which is about 146 a day. In addition, the movement added 256,000 new athletes and grew to more than 4 million athletes competing in more than 170 countries. The asia pacific region and the east asia region both have more than 1 million athletes. Throughout the world over 306,000 coaches provided support and guidance to special olympics athletes. The movement's top sports are athletics, football, basketball, bowling and bocce. Special olympics unified sports participation has surpassed half a million athletes (226,076) and partners (320,728) who are now engaged in unified sports opportunities, an increase of more than 10 percent from 2010. The healthy athletes program conducted 116,000 health screenings at 765 events including the world summer games in greece. The world summer games were held in athens, greece from june 26 to july 4. Nearly 7,000 from more than 170 countries competed in 21 sports. In september 2011 it was announced that los angeles, california usa will host the next special olympics world summer games in 2015. Throughout the year, preparations took place for the 2013 world winter games in pyeongchang, korea which including a test games event where about 1000 athletes, coaches and escorts from 15 countries participated.
