| At-Risk YouthIn July 2015, PCF created, guided, and funded a new collaboration to support vulnerable youth. Grants were made to Mentor Me ($6,500), Committee on the Shelterless, ($6,500) and the Free Bookmobile of Sonoma County ($2,000) to work together in order to achieve the following goals: Maximizing mentor recruitment and reducing the waiting list for mentorsProviding additional training to mentors about Adverse Childhood Experiences(ACEs) and Resilience BuildingIncluding youth living in COTS residential housing in Mentor Me programsPromoting literacy and bonding through the availability of new, age-appropriate booksThe commitment of these organizations to collaborate resulted in expanded and enhanced support for vulnerable children, youth and their families:Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Building Resilience Training:2 training sessions 80 mentors trained ACEs are defined as experiences before the age of 18 that deeply impact a young person and profoundly affect emotional and physical health later in life. These experiences include any combination of the following:Emotional, physical or sexual abuseMental illness or substance abuse in the householdLoss of parent(s) to deathLoss of parent(s) to incarcerationDivorce or separation in the familyChild witnessing abuse of a family memberSevere neglectAttempted suicide in the household96% of the kids that Mentor Me works with have multiple ACEs; 80% of the homeless adults that COTS works with have 4 or more ACEs. In short, training in ACEs better equips mentors to effectively help vulnerable youth convert challenges into opportunities to build resilience while promoting positive choices, relationships, and activities.Maximize Recruitment of Mentors:25 new mentors recruited through the outreach efforts of COTSWaiting list reduced from a high of 115 to the current low of 62National research confirms the value and impact of mentoring: mentored youth, as compared to un-mentored youth, are 46% less likely to initiate drug use; 27% less likely to initiate alcohol use; 52% less likely to skip school; and 32% less likely to hit someone. Mentor Mes statistics confirm this pattern with 98% reporting the benefits of mentoring with respect to any combination of these factors.During this year, on average there were 274 ongoing mentoring relationships with a minimum two- year commitment.Outreach to youth living in COTS Residential Housing:25 COTS kids participated in Mentor Me group programs3 COTS' kids matched with a mentorYouth from COTS were able to:Use the Student Lounge at the Cavanagh Center to do homework with the availability of computers and printers.Enjoy the art room and participate in the Mentee Art Show Make food in the Mentee Caf.Participate in the Mentor Me Sail for Science field trip, where they traveled with Mentor Me kids by bus to San Francisco, spent the day on a sailboat that is involved with science research, and learned about ocean science and weather.Promoting literacy and family bonding:OUTCOMES BY AGE GROUP (through 4/27/16)Age groupNumber of persons served0 5 year olds 2676 17 60018 54)(229) TOTAL1,096(Statistics also provided for the adults, staff, and volunteers present at each of the locations.)Low-income children and youth often do not have access to books and their parents often come from a culture that does not prioritize reading. Yet books in the home are known to increase the educational level that children will attain. Such support is likewise documented to improve academic achievement, reduce the need for special education, increase employment and earning capacity, as well as reduce crime and delinquency.Locations served included Committee on the Shelterless, elementary schools, local Boys & Girls Clubhouses, early childhood development centers and public sites.Seniors:PCF made a grant in the amount of $5,000 to PEP Housing. The grant was used to help reduce the isolation of seniors through an innovative program that supplied iPads to senior residents to be trained by high school students. Upon successful completion of the program, not only did the seniors get to keep the iPads, but also year-long technical support was accessible. The availability of iPads improves quality of life by allowing seniors to keep in regular communication with loved ones, doctors and other service providers. Capacity-Building Consulation:Ongoing consulting was provided to several nonprofits, including Mentor Me, Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin & Southern Sonoma Counties, and Cinnabar Theater to increase organizational capacity and performance. Consulting Services were tailored to the specific needs of each nonprofit and included:One on one Executive coaching with Executive Directors to clarify roles and responsibilities and maximize partnership with Board of DirectorsReview of organizational structure to enhance organizational performanceGovernance trainings highlighting board best practicesBoard trainings that outlined trustee expectations, fiduciary responsibilities and conflict of interest issuesOutline of the role of a Committee on Trustees and related recruitment strategies, board checklist, orientation manual and board evaluationBoard Officer succession planningReview of bylaws, proposed amendments and related committee structureCapacity-building, marketing and fundraising strategiesProgram data collection to measure impact and increase grant revenueProposal preparation for potential grant opportunitiesCollective impact strategies Facilitation of nonprofit collaborations | $75,357 | $20,000 |
