DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PCF invested $75,100 of community dollars in the vision, planning and successful execution of a Youth At-Risk Collaboration of 8 local nonprofits---to coordinate and consolidate community resources for enhanced support for vulnerable, children, youth, and their families. Our Foundation seized upon the opportunity presented by the availability of the Cavanagh Center as a central hub for youth at-risk to identify and leverage community resources. PCFs leadership role in convening, guiding and funding the collaborative efforts of these organizations has ensured the most comprehensive and well-coordinated package of services for vulnerable youth and their families. Our strong alliances across the nonprofit community have permitted the kind of ongoing coaching and facilitation for the Collaboration to be right on target in meeting stated goals, including:Providing a central place for youth to participate in educational and recreational programming Filling early child development and education openings available for low-income families Promoting literacy through the availability of free books for kids of all agesCoordinating efforts across multiple nonprofits to identify and recruit mentors for youth at-riskSharing expertise in identifying kids in need of anger management, delinquency, gang prevention, and community engagement programsPromoting good nutrition, practical sustainability skills, and a healthy respect for natural resourcesCollaboration meetings facilitated by PCF successfully inspired creative thinking and sharing of resources for maximum impact in helping vulnerable youth. The following represents highlights of this Collaboration:1.Through 2 PCF grants, Rebuilding Together Petaluma mobilized 118 volunteers and leveraged resources to renovate the common areas and the Game Room at the Cavanagh Center. 2.On January 22, 2015, Mentor Me hosted the Grand Opening of the newly-renovated Cavanagh Center as a central hub for vulnerable youth year-round, which was able to open 6 months ahead of schedule.3.The Free Bookmobile of Sonoma County was on site at the Grand Opening and 61 kids of all ages selected free, age-appropriate books. 4.The Free Bookmobile visited all of the local areas Boys & Girls Clubs sites, all of the low-income preschools, child development centers, after-care sites and summer camps. 487 kids (up to 5 years old) and 825 youth (6 to 17) received age-appropriate books. 5.Mentor Me and North Bay Childrens Center (NBCC) worked together to maximize enrollment and scholarship opportunities for low- income families, NBCC held their staff development day on site at the Cavanagh Center, and Mentor Me collaborated with the site coordinator at the Mary Collins School at Cherry Valley to identify common families between the two organizations.6.North Bay Childrens Center served 123 children in 5 classrooms in the School Readiness Program at the McDowell and Cherry Valley campuses, supported staff training and classroom coaching for 10 teachers, conducted 78 preschool children assessments, engaged families in the Raising a Reader Program, and purchased both curriculum and replacement books for 78 children. 7.On April 13, 2015, Sunny Hills Services provided an overview on the topic of Restorative Justice at the Cavanagh Center for an audience of 25 Associate Principals, Counselors, and School Administrators, as well as a number of nonprofit leaders and community members.8.The Sunny Hills YouThrive program provided prevention/intervention services related to anger management and gang involvement to 93 youth in Petaluma at various sites, including Casa Grande High School, Crossroads Middle School, Kenilworth Junior High School, Petaluma Junior High School, Petaluma High School and San Antonio High School, as well as services to 39 youth at 3 Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin and Southern Sonoma Counties sites.9.On April 22, 2015, for the first time, multiple nonprofits joined Mentor Me in a recruitment drive resulting in 25 new mentors.10.Kids from the cohort of youth currently in the gang prevention/intervention program (Sunny Hills Services and Boys & Girls Clubs) are being considered for mentors if they are not currently on the waitlist.11.Daily Acts scheduled workshops for Summer 2015 on site at the Cavanagh Center (Exploring the Garden, Beautifying the Garden and Harvesting the Garden) designed to teach kids about practical sustainability skills and garden-based projects that promote health.12.Petaluma Small Craft Center signed up 6 low-income youth from Mentor Me and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin & Southern Sonoma Counties to participate in a multi-sport Small Crafts Summer Camp.$178,828$75,100
