Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

On July 1, 2009, the Foundation adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits or expenses are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by tax authorities. The Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and State of California. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the Foundation's financial condition, results of operations or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain tax positions at June 30, 2016.The Foundation's policy is to classify income tax related interest and penalties as interest expense on the financial statements.The Foundation's 2014, 2013, and 2012 tax years remain subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board.

IRS990/Desc0Sponsored projects and International Programs- The Foundation sponsors two international programs- the DESAME project in Africa, which has two main components- medical aid for victims of HIV and a Council program aimed at discussing family and intimate issues that relate to the spread of HIV with the goal of helping to reduce the prevalence of the disease. There are 171 people being served by the medical component and 70 additional people involved in just the Council component.The main sponsorship is of the Bridgewalkers project- a film about American indiginous peoples, elders, and shamans as they share their visions and prophesies, bringing the timeless spiritual wisdom and sacred ceremonies of their traditions to address the critical issues of today.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Council in Schools- brings Council into schools in order to provide a practice that addresses relationship (connection) and relevance (meaning) in education. Strives to encourage the development of true empathy and respect for one another in order to cultivate mutual understanding. More than 60 public and independent schools and over 6,000 students are involved every year. Adult members of the school communities are also involved and given council training- teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents- so that they might lead student councils or continue the practice on their own.

Through compassionate, heartfelt expression and empathic, non-judgmental listening, Council inspires a non-bierarchical form of deep communication that reveals a group's vision and purpose. Council offers effective means of resolving conflicts and for discovering the deeper, often unexpressed needs of individuals and organizations. Council provides a comprehensive means for co-visioning and making decisions in a group context.The Foundation hosted over 25 large Council programs during the year and over 100 individual and small-group retreats.For youth programs- allowing youth to mark times of significance while providing a rich background that helps to frame these experiences. Furthermore, these experiences are grounded within group interaction and relationship, which encourages youth to connect with each other while exploring the depths of their personal selves. For one to five day retreats, youths participate in Council, ropes course activities, art, personal introspection, rites of passage, land-work projects, and they have the opportunity to live together in a village-style format. By combining these activities in a unique way, the Foundation hopes that students will explore the significant transitions of their lives, clarify personal values, explore issues of diversity, and deepen their relationship to nature, themselves, and each other.There were about 50 youth retreats during the year.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0On July 1, 2009, the Foundation adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits or expenses are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by tax authorities. The Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and State of California. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the Foundation's financial condition, results of operations or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain tax positions at June 30, 2016.The Foundation's policy is to classify income tax related interest and penalties as interest expense on the financial statements.The Foundation's 2014, 2013, and 2012 tax years remain subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board.
