“Falling forward foundation makes grants to premiere medical rehabilitation centers which fund continued therapies for indivduals after their insurance benefits run out. Our grants change the lives of people recovering from catastrophic events such as strokes, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, making it possible for them to regain their lives and independence. Each year, over 1 million people in america suffer catastrophic medical events including strokes, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. These tragic events literally happen to people of all ages, resulting from car accidents, sports injuries, or something as seemingly innocent as an ill-timed fall. Virtually all of these people have medical insurance policies with a "therapy cap" that will limit their physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy to 20 to 30 visits --- just a fraction of what will be required to more completely restore ability and reduce disability. For patients who have exhausted their insurance benefits and still have achievable therapy goals - but cannot personally afford the full cost of continued therapy - therapy caps mean they will not fully recover and will face a life limited by their disability. Since falling forward was founded in 2013, our grants have made it possible for over 100 people to continue therapy and recover to their full potential. With additional rehabilitation, disabilities have been reversed and people have resumed happy, productive lives. We're extremely proud of the outcomes achieved by falling forward patients. People who suffered spinal cord injuries are able to walk again people who suffered traumatic brain injuries are now able to drive and able to return to work people who suffered strokes are again able to live independently falling forward patients are proving what is possible with complete and comprehensive therapies in addition to funding continued therapy, the foundation also advocates for legislation to reduce or eliminate therapy caps. Partnering with other patient-centered organizations, we were successful in removing therapy caps for medicare beneficiaries in 2018. However, therapy caps remain in virtually all commercial health insurance policies.”
