| 1) Research: We create knowledge that instills public life into policy and design change. We study how cities can improve public life, and how public life can improve public health, civic participation, and climate adaptation. We analyze policy to reveal the opportunities for change and develop forward-looking solutions that result in thriving people and places. 2) Counsel: We provide expert counsel to civic groups, practitioners, leaders, and decision-makers. We train local governments, foundations, and community organizations to use our public life research tools and evaluation frameworks. We provide insights to achieve systemic change in practices and policies that impact the built environment. 3) Facilitate: We bring together diverse stakeholders and create experiences that orient policymakers and activists toward new ideas. We host conferences, seminars and other public programs where planners, designers, city officials, and grassroots leaders explore opportunities to make public spaces more active and more equitable. Through hands-on approaches to learning and sharing, we direct the conversation to future possibilities. Our biggest accomplishments for 2019 were: Hosting a health and public space masterclass in San Francisco, for practitioners, students, and academics from around the world and publishing the Public Life Data Protocol, guidance on how cities can collect standardized data around public life and space. | $85,413 | - |

| IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt | 0 | Current Year Facts and Circumstances: 1. Although the support percentage fell below 33.33%, it is still well in excess of the 10% threshold 2. The organizations support is primarily public in nature came from other foundations, civic organizations and local governments. The institute has ceased its operations however in the past had worked to broaden its base of support by strengthening its development activities, e.g., more grant writing, and seeking support for its public education program called Public Life Data Protocol. 3. In accordance with its mission, the Institute has in the past hosted a series of educational symposiums in various cities (San Francisco in 2018) which seek to educate participants on various matters related to urban planning matters. At events such as these, Institute convened leaders in city planning, from public and non-profit sectors, in panels, workshops, lectures, and walking tours to explore how cities and public spaces could provide more equal opportunity and become healthy places for all to enjoy. 4. Finally, as mentioned above, the Institute, in line with its mission, has focused on its Public Data Protocol initiative, which is a publicly available tool which aims to improve the ability for all institutions, organizations, and the public to compare information about what people do in public spaces and proscribe a set of metrics to help understand the use of public spaces. Cities around the U.S. have data on everything from traffic to noise pollution to where pigeons roost, but often do not have any data on how people use shared urban spaces. Where do they walk? Or spend time? And how does this vary by gender, or age? For city makers to design and develop places in a way that works for people, they need to understand their patterns and habits. The Protocol is a resource cities can use to start collecting data on how people use public spaces in their city. All data is anonymous. Collecting data in a consistent way will allow cities around the country to compare their findings and track changes over time. |
