“The operations manager reviews the draft 990 with the treasurer, addressing all questions the treasurer may have and making any necessary changes. The treasurer then distributes the updated draft to the full board via email with a notice that they are to respond to the treasurer with any question/comments within five business days. Once the five days have expired and all questions have been fully addressed by the treasurer and/or the operations manager, the treasurer then notifies the operations manager via email that the 990 is ready to file.”
“The conflict of interest policy is constantly monitored by administration personnel and the board of directors through review and approval procedures. Annually board members and key staff complete a conflict of interest disclosure form identifying any relationships or circumstances which the board or staff member believes could contribute to a conflict of interest. An employee of the corporation with a potential conflict of interest in a particular matter shall promptly and fully disclose the potential conflict to his/her supervisor. The employee shall thereafter refrain from participating in deliberations and discussion, as well as any decisions, relating to the matter and follow the direction of the supervisor as to how the corporation decisions which are the subject of the conflict will be determined. The president shall be responsible for determining the proper way for the corporation to handle corporation decisions which involve unresolved employee conflicts of interest. In making such determinations, the president may consult with legal counsel.”
“The board of directors must approve in advance the amount of all compensation for officers of the corporation. Before approving the compensation of an officer, the board shall determine that the total compensation to be provided by the corporation to the officer is reasonable in amount in light of the position, responsibility and qualification of the officer for the position held, including the result of an evaluation of the officer's prior performance for the corporation, if applicable. In making the determination, the board shall consider total compensation to include the salary and the value of all benefits provided by the corporation to the individual in payment for services. At the time of the discussion and decision concerning an officer's compensation, the officer should not be present in the meeting. The board shall obtain and consider appropriate data concerning comparable compensation paid to similar officers in like circumstances. The board shall set forth the basis for its decisions with respect to compensation in the minutes of the meeting at which the decisions are made, including the conclusions of the evaluation and the basis for determining that the individual's compensation was reasonable in light of the evaluation and the comparability data.”

Ibiology is increasingly producing content for the general public that highlights the spirit of scientific discovery, expands the notion of "who is a scientist,- and explains key breakthroughs and concepts. This project is made possible by the good will of many biologists who are committed to making their work broadly accessible and to conveying the excitement of biology to a worldwide audience.”
“Seminars and courses for life scientists scientific seminars and professional development workshops are critical for the training of scientists, especially young scientists. These activities are central to the educational programs of elite universities, but are absent or lacking in the vast majority of educational institutions in the us and around the globe. By producing and freely disseminating videos via the internet, our goal is to democratize knowledge and the research advances made by leading scientists and offer training in careers in the life sciences. Seminars: scientific talks represent an extremely important means of conveying knowledge, ideas, and research findings. Elite universities have the funds and reputation to host excellent seminar series, but such institutions represent a very small percentage of educational and research institutions around the world. The scientific community has a moral obligation to make talks from leading biologists accessible to anyone for free. Through nsf funding, ibiology is tackling this open access challenge by filming scientific talks by the world's leading biologists and making them available on-demand and free-of-charge on youtube and the ibiology website. We are also making science more "human" by exposing students to the many different personalities that make up our profession, and providing a window into the process of scientific discovery. By watching ibiology talks from leading researchers, viewers can appreciate that biology is not just a sea of facts, but an intellectual endeavor to understand some of the most fascinating questions of modern times. Through ibiology videos, students can sense the passion of scientists for their work and understand the steps required to obtain evidence to support a hypothesis. Viewers can "meet" a nobel prize winner and hear about the eureka moment that led to a discovery that has now become part of the body of knowledge in the textbooks. Through the lens of ibiology, students, postdocs, and senior scientists can readily learn about new fields outside of their own area of expertise. Ibiology videos provide access to important recent research advances as well as insights into future research questions that remain to be solved. Ibiology provides teachers at high schools, colleges, and universities with access to high- level biology talks and resources for incorporating their use in classrooms. Ibiology has created free educational materials to accompany many of the videos. These include discussion and review questions, literature suggestions, and other classroom activities. Ibiology has also created four full flipped classroom course curricula that educators can adapt for their own teaching needs. With lasker foundation funding, ibiology also runs the young scientist seminars (yss), where graduate students and postdocs apply to participate in a science communication workshop held in collaboration between ibiology and the alan alda center for communicating science; their filmed talks are then posted by ibiology. Professional training and career development videos: the future of biomedical research and the us bioeconomy depends upon our ability to train and motivate the next generation of scientists and science-related professionals. To this end, ibiology started making online courses for the training and professional development of graduate students and post-docs several years ago with support from the nih. This included building a custom online course platform and creating several courses on doing good science. The first course focused on asking a scientific question, the second course focused on experimental design, and the third course will be about science communication (to be released in 2020). We've also built a professional development resource center focused to help trainees navigate their many career options after their training.”
“Videos for the general public we are increasingly planning and producing video content for a general audience. Our goal is to focus on developing films (short form, feature- length, and series) that are engaging, entertaining, and scientifically accurate to convey the most exciting breakthroughs in the life sciences. We will differentiate our productions from other efforts by our unique production model based on strong partnerships between scientists and storytellers. We will focus on conveying the process and excitement of scientific discovery. We will work with traditional distributors and also endeavor to tailor content for digital distribution while using social media to create dialogue between the public and scientists around our films. We plan on repurposing our content for a variety of purposes and audiences. Overall, we hope that these efforts will create broader awareness, appreciation and support of the life sciences. Our flagship effort in this space is a feature-length documentary on the revolutionary gene editing technology known as crispr. This project was created through deep and ongoing consultation and collaboration between scientists and award-winning filmmakers. We have received generous funding from foundations not only for the production of the film but for an engagement campaign after its release. So far, the film has been screened at film festivals to great reviews, and will be released in theaters and broadcast on tv in numerous countries in late 2019 through early 2020. We are also producing a number of videos for the general public that are more limited in scope and resources from the documentary. We have teamed up with iconic journalist dan rather to interview scientists about their research and paths of discovery. We are profiling scientists from underrepresented backgrounds about how their life experiences have shaped their science. And we are producing videos in conjunction with xbio elucidating the fascinating stories behind famous groundbreaking experiments.”
“Educational materials for undergraduate students textbooks reach large numbers of students and influence how educators teach. We feel that the textbook, which has changed little in decades, is ripe for a bold and provocative transformation. We will produce an introductory biology resource (called xbio) that first re-thinks how to present biology to students and second integrates all of the tools of how students learn, including stimulating visuals, motion graphic animations, online lectures, professional videos demonstrating science in action, personal stories, recent science news, peer-to-peer and in-class discussions, problem sets, and even social media. This resource which is currently under development will be free-of-charge, recognizing the financial barrier posed by current textbooks and the responsibility of making learning freely accessible to every student and adult around the world. Xbio will be focused on college-level introductory biology, which is often the first encounter for undergraduate majors and non-majors with the life sciences. Xbio will be used primarily online to incorporate and display multi-media features. However, recognizing internet deficiencies and preferences of some students/teachers, we will make it possible to download chapters onto small storage devices or for printing.”
“Enhancing biomedical training and diversity through a hispanic science network in collaboration with yale university, cienciapr created the yale ciencia academy (yca, www.cienciapr.org/yca), a year-long program to enhance the career development and professional skills of phd students from underrepresented backgrounds in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. The yale ciencia academy responds to the need of young scientists for information about professional opportunities and guidance on how to be more competitive for careers in academia and other sectors. The program provides training on transferable skills to complement the research training doctoral students receive and to better prepare them to achieve their professional goals while having an impact on society. This free mostly-virtual program leverages the cienciapr community - the largest network of puerto rican scientists in the world - to connect doctoral students pursuing biological, health or behavioral sciences research with advisors and mentors from diverse backgrounds, science outreach and leadership opportunities, and professional development training. Through workshops and online conversations with successful professionals, participants explore different careers; define their academic and professional goals; expand their networks; and acquire new communication and leadership skills. The program also facilitates students' contributions to their communities through science outreach. In addition, those selected will be able to attend the annual conference of the american association for the advancement of science (aaas), the largest scientific organization in the world, with all expenses paid. To date, 154 graduate students from 71 institutions in puerto rico and the u.s. Have participated in the program. Preliminary data shows that students have more confidence in their communication skills, better mentoring, and higher scientific and professional development self- efficacy. To date, 110 group or individual outreach projects have been completed by the first 3 cohorts, impacting approximately 17,000 people.”

“Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america provide consistent guidance for the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in the organization's financial statements and prescribe a threshold of "more likely than not" for recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Ibiology performed an evaluation of uncertain tax positions for the year ended june 30, 2019 and determined that there were no matters that would require recognition in the financial statements or that may have any effect on its tax-exempt status. As of june 30, 2019, the statute of limitations for tax years 2015 through 2017 remains open with the u.s. Federal jurisdiction or the various state and local jurisdictions in which the organization files tax returns. It is the organization's policy to recognize interest and/or penalties related to uncertain tax positions, if any, in income tax expense. As of june 30, 2019, the organization had no accruals for interest and/or penalties.”

WE'VE ALSO BUILT A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE CENTER FOCUSED TO HELP TRAINEES NAVIGATE THEIR MANY CAREER OPTIONS AFTER THEIR TRAINING. |

AND WE ARE PRODUCING VIDEOS IN CONJUNCTION WITH XBIO ELUCIDATING THE FASCINATING STORIES BEHIND FAMOUS GROUNDBREAKING EXPERIMENTS. |

HOWEVER, RECOGNIZING INTERNET DEFICIENCIES AND PREFERENCES OF SOME STUDENTS/TEACHERS, WE WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD CHAPTERS ONTO SMALL STORAGE DEVICES OR FOR PRINTING. |

TO DATE, 110 GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL OUTREACH PROJECTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BY THE FIRST 3 COHORTS, IMPACTING APPROXIMATELY 17,000 PEOPLE. |

AS OF JUNE 30, 2019, THE ORGANIZATION HAD NO ACCRUALS FOR INTEREST AND/OR PENALTIES. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | IBIOLOGY'S MISSION IS TO CONVEY, IN THE FORM OF OPEN-ACCESS FREE VIDEOS, THE EXCITEMENT OF MODERN BIOLOGY AND THE PROCESS BY WHICH SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES ARE MADE. THE ORGANIZATION'S AIM IS TO INTRODUCE THE LEADING SCIENTISTS IN BIOLOGY, HOW THEY THINK ABOUT SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS AND CONDUCT THEIR RESEARCH, AND MAKE KNOWN THEIR PERSONALITIES, OPINIONS, AND PERSPECTIVES. THE ORGANIZATION IS INNOVATING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF GRADUATE STUDENTS AND POSTDOCS THROUGH A SERIES OF COURSES THAT ADDRESS EXPERIMENTAL PLANNING, DESIGN, AND COMMUNICATION. THROUGH THEIR EXISTING VIDEO CONTENT AND A FAR-REACHING PROJECT SEEKING TO REIMAGINE AN INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY TEXTBOOK, THEY ALSO ENDEAVOR TO SUPPORT EDUCATORS WHO WANT TO INCORPORATE MATERIALS THAT ILLUSTRATE THE PROCESS AND PRACTICE OF SCIENCE INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. THIS PROJECT IS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE GOOD WILL OF MANY BIOLOGISTS WHO ARE COMMITTED TO MAKING THEIR WORK BROADLY ACCESSIBLE AND TO CONVEYING THE EXCITEMENT OF BIOLOGY TO A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | SEMINARS AND COURSES FOR LIFE SCIENTISTS SCIENTIFIC SEMINARS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS ARE CRITICAL FOR THE TRAINING OF SCIENTISTS, ESPECIALLY YOUNG SCIENTISTS. WE'VE ALSO BUILT A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESOURCE CENTER FOCUSED TO HELP TRAINEES NAVIGATE THEIR MANY CAREER OPTIONS AFTER THEIR TRAINING. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 2 | VIDEOS FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC WE ARE INCREASINGLY PLANNING AND PRODUCING VIDEO CONTENT FOR A GENERAL AUDIENCE. AND WE ARE PRODUCING VIDEOS IN CONJUNCTION WITH XBIO ELUCIDATING THE FASCINATING STORIES BEHIND FAMOUS GROUNDBREAKING EXPERIMENTS. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 3 | EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TEXTBOOKS REACH LARGE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS AND INFLUENCE HOW EDUCATORS TEACH. HOWEVER, RECOGNIZING INTERNET DEFICIENCIES AND PREFERENCES OF SOME STUDENTS/TEACHERS, WE WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD CHAPTERS ONTO SMALL STORAGE DEVICES OR FOR PRINTING. |
