Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of JIA Foundation is to work to empower Japanese in America (JIA), and their families and friends by connecting them to resources, to one another and to the community. Our goal is to help JIA live fulfilling and productive lives with appreciation for our heritage, become good citizens in the US community, and develop effective communication among generations of JIA families and the communities. JIA Foundation was established to meet the needs of the current wave of Japanese immigrants, offering services in Japanese language, and over time, our programming has expanded to offer activities in both English and Japanese. We appreciate Japanese culture and values, while valuing the diversity of JIAs. Through collaboration, we create a supportive environment for personal and professional growth and empower JIAs to thrive in the US while honoring our cultural heritage.

SEIJIN-shiki is a Japanese Coming of Age Celebration. We host a ceremony every year in Bellevue to celebrate young people turning 20 years old, welcoming young adults of any nationality: Japanese citizens living in the United States (or dual citizenship holders), Japanese Americans, and other young US citizens and residents of any nationality, who have interests and affinity for Japanese culture. Additionally, their families, friends, and any interested community members are also invited. For those with Japanese roots, it is an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and values and to strengthen their identity as Japanese. It is also an opportunity for Japanese culture to be shared and for friendships to be built and deepened among multinational attendees from the community. The event is held on the second Sunday of January. Our goals are: 1) To celebrate the coming of age for young Japanese in America and help them strengthen their cultural identity, 2) To offer opportunities to young Americans to learn about Japanese culture and to develop into a new generation of leaders with understanding and appreciation for Japanese and other cultures, 3) To introduce Japanese culture to communities in the US. For the 2024 event, over 100 young adults participated, 68 guests/partners attended, and it was supported by 55 volunteers and performers.$0$10,813
JIA Foundation initiated a Family Summer Camp, called "Rinkan-Gakko" in Japanese, in 2018 with the purpose of providing families with an opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese-style summer camp in the United States. The program emphasizes the use of Japanese language throughout the entire duration of the camp and encourages children and parents to participate in various cultural activities, such as cooking, outdoor games, morning exercise, and cleaning. This unique program not only allows children to practice their Japanese language skills but also to learn about Japanese culture and meet other children who share similar cultural and social backgrounds. Moreover, parents can share with their children the activities that they themselves experienced in their childhood, and they can also engage with other parents who may have similar parenting concerns in the U.S. In the summer of 2024, 17 adults, 17 children ages from 4 to 14 years, and 11 staff members participated in the two-day camp in Camp Huston. They engaged in activities such as orienteering in hiking trails, other outdoor activities, and cooking and eating together.$0$1,551
To foster a sense of community, JIA Social offers opportunities for people to connect, enjoy time together, and appreciate Japanese heritage, including food and culture. Everyone, of all generations and of any nationality, who has an interest in Japan is welcome, but communication is mostly conducted in Japanese. We held two in-person community events in 2024.$0$461
Heart-no-WA (Heart of WA) / JIA Seminar: There are many unknowns and pitfalls in living overseas where the language, culture, and system are all new to people. By offering informative and educational seminars and workshops in Japanese on topics covering every aspect of JIA's lives, we help them find the resources they need to live fulfilling and productive lives in the US. Topics covered in the past include: Raising children in the U.S., healthcare system, Mental health awareness, Long-term care in the U.S., Support for domestic violence survivors, Stop Asian Hate, and Divorce process and Child custody. We offer a few seminars/workshops in a year. Some are free admission to all. Any seminar may have 15 to 70 participants. Our goal is to help JIA live fulfilling and productive lives and become good citizens in the U.S. society and the communities we live in.$0$73

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Our organization requested and was granted an extension for the submission of the 2024 Form 990-EZ. The extension was necessary due to transitions within our accounting personnel during the reporting period. Unfortunately, the handover process was not completed as smoothly as anticipated, which led to delays in compiling the necessary financial records for the return. We acted in good faith to comply with all filing requirements and took prompt steps to ensure accurate and complete reporting once the transition issues were identified. We respectfully request that any late filing penalties be waived on the basis of reasonable cause.
