Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of JIA Foundation is to work to empower Japanese in America (JIA), and their families and friends by connecting them to resources, to one another and to the community. Our goal is to help JIA live fulfilling and productive lives with appreciation for our heritage, become good citizens in the US community, and develop effective communication among generations of JIA families and the communities. JIA Foundation was established to meet the needs of the current wave of Japanese immigrants, offering services in Japanese language, and over time, our programming has expanded to offer activities in both English and Japanese. We appreciate Japanese culture and values, while valuing the diversity of JIAs. Through collaboration, we create a supportive environment for personal and professional growth and empower JIAs to thrive in the US while honoring our cultural heritage.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Seijin-shiki is an event that welcomes young Japanese citizens (and dual citizenship holders) who have moved to or grown up in the United States, Japanese Americans, and other young adults of any nationality with interests and affinity for Japanese culture. Additionally, their families, friends, and any interested community members are also invited. For those with Japanese roots (we refer to JIA, Japanese in America), it is an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and values and to strengthen their identity as Japanese. It is also an opportunity for Japanese culture to be shared and for friendships to be built and deepened among multinational attendees from the community. The event is held on the second Sunday of January. Our goals are: 1) To celebrate the coming of age for young Japanese in America and help them strengthen their cultural identity 2) To offer opportunities to young Americans to learn about Japanese culture and to develop into a new generation of leaders with understanding and appreciation for Japanese and other cultures 3) To introduce Japanese culture to communities in the US. For the 2022 event, over 160 young adults registered, and close to 209 people participated in the YouTube Live stream. The YouTube archive has received more than 1,750 views. In-kind donation of kimono rental and dressing service worth $1,280 were contributed for the event.$0$10,227
Heart-No-WA (Heart of WA) / JIA Seminar: There are many unknowns and pitfalls in living overseas where the language, culture, and system are all new to people. By offering informative and educational seminars and workshops in Japanese on topics covering every aspect of JIA members' lives. We help them find the resources they need to live fulfilling and productive lives in the US. Topics covered in the past include: Raising children in the U.S., US healthcare system, Mental health awareness, Long-term care in the U.S., Support for domestic violence survivors, Stop Asian Hate, and Divorce process and Child custody. We offer 6 -12 seminars/workshops in a year. Some are free admission to all. And each seminar we have a range of 15~70 participants. Our goal is to help JIA live fulfilling and productive lives and become good citizens in the US society and the communities we live in.$0$444
JIA Social offers opportunities for people to connect, enjoy time together, and appreciate Japanese heritage, including food and culture, to foster a sense of community. Everyone, of all generations, who has an interest in Japan is welcome, but communication is mostly conducted in Japanese. We held in-person social events twice in 2022.$0$291
JIA Foundation initiated a Family Summer Camp, called "Rinkan Gakko" in Japanese, in 2018 with the purpose of providing families with an opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese-style summer camp in the United States. The program emphasizes the use of Japanese language throughout the entire duration of the camp, encouraging children and parents to participate in various cultural activities, such as kids' cooking, outdoor games, morning exercise, and cleaning. This unique program not only allows children to practice their Japanese language skills but also to learn about Japanese culture and meet other children who share similar cultural and social backgrounds. Moreover, parents can enjoy the activities that they themselves experienced in their childhood and engage with other parents who may have similar parenting concerns in the U.S. Due to the pandemic, the summer camp had to be cancelled in 2020 and 2021. However, the event resumed on August 20th, 2022, as a one-day event in New Castle, WA. Thirteen adults and twelve children, ranging age from 4 to 14 years, participated in orienteering in hiking trail, other outdoor activities, and a had lunch together.$0$202
