Additional Explanations

Part I, Line 1

Mends minds, inc. (mmm) is a 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 2014, that fosters the development of musical support groups/bands of patients with alzheimer's, dementia, parkinson's, as well as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and ptsd. We aim to create a community between the musicians and singers, as well as their families, friends, and caregivers, all of whom thrive on the socialization and music making. Mmm provides this cost-effective strategy to increase mental/emotional stimulation, promote empowerment, reduce stress and isolation, and improve overall quality of life through the power of music. Mmm also strives to educate our community and public about the latest scientific findings regarding the benefits of music and brain through several platforms including online and in print resources. Since march 2020, we have pivoted to a virtual musical merriment platform, enabling participants to be on a zoom platform 3 times per week, to continue indefinitely. We did not lose any time providing support for our audience with neurodegenerative diseases. This has worked very well as this participation, as a group and singular solos, brings joy to the audience. The zoom sessions are led by a board-certified music therapist, who leads the group with breathing exercises and music transformation. Mmm has observed that participation in mmm's musical programs can improve outcomes of traditional treatment regimens, forestall seniors from entering isolated nursing homes, cut possible healthcare costs for expensive treatment and bring joy back into the lives of our community of struggling patients. With an increasing market and crucial need to find solutions to the issue of neurodegeneration with aging, the demand for mmm's novel methods and service is expected to increase. Cognitive skills such as attention, engagement and comprehension are tracked by observing participation through prompted and unprompted movement, instrument play, and singing. At least 70% of participants actively demonstrate these cognitive skills each session. Mmm is partnered with several rotary international clubs nationwide that have formed and parented mmm bands. Rotary is a global service organization with over 33,000 clubs in 200+ countries, with over 1.2 million volunteers. Fourteen of the 19 mmm bands have been formed by rotary clubs. Mmm has partnered with two global arms of the international rotary organization: one is called alzheimer's dementia rotary action group (adrag) and the other is the international fellowship of rotarian musicians (ifrm). Adrag is an action group focused on bringing attention to the growing epidemic of neurocognitive diseases, specifically alzheimer's and dementia. Mmm is a resource partner and we share a mission to spread awareness and educate about research regarding alzheimer's and dementia. Ifrm is composed of rotarians, spouses, and rotary students who want to connect with each other through their love of music. Ifrm accomplishes its mission to "promote and encourage the use and appreciation of music in rotary clubs in our society and, thereby, to encourage world understanding" by working with mmm to discover and start new mmm bands. Tavistock, uk was the first mmm ifrm band formed, and the rwanda red rock band was formed this past year. Mmm and rotary clubs international global initiative entitled music is like medicine, will take precedence for the next fiscal year.

Part III, Line 1

Music mends minds, inc. (mmm) is a 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 2014, that fosters the development of musical support groups/bands of patients with alzheimer's, dementia, parkinson's, as well as traumatic brain injury, stroke, and ptsd. The goal is to create a community between the musicians and singers, as well as their families, friends, and caregivers, all of whom thrive on the socialization and music making. Mmm provides this cost-effective strategy to increase mental/emotional stimulation, promote empowerment, reduce stress and isolation, and improve overall quality of life through the power of music. Mmm also aims to educate our community and public about the latest scientific findings regarding the benefits of music and brain through several platforms including online and in print resources. Mmm has 18 active bands and more in formation when the pandemic is over. Since march 2020, we have pivoted to a virtual musical merriment platform, enabling participants to be on a zoom platform 3 times per week. This has worked very well as this participation, as a group and singular solos, brings joy to the audience. The zoom sessions are led by a board-certified music therapist, who leads the group with breathing exercises and music transformation. We have plans to expand this experience in the future. We are partnered with several rotary international clubs across the nation that have formed and parented mmm bands. With this blueprint in place, we are promoting the project to rotary international clubs both nationally and globally. This project has a strong need in society today as research shows that music storage remains intact in spite of the disease process, rehabilitating and bringing joy to our entire community, as we wait for a cure. Every 3 seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. Furthermore, it is estimated that 5.8 million people of all ages suffer from alzheimer's. With this number projected to increase by 2050, alongside an aging population (alz.org), the alzheimer's association estimates a societal cost of $1.1 trillion associated with treating alzheimer's and other dementias in the u.s. Alone. Similarly, parkinson's disease afflicts one million americans, costing nearly $52 billion each year.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0MENDS MINDS, INC.
