“Music Mends Minds, Inc. (MMM) is a 501(c) (3) organization that fosters the development of musical support groups bands of patients with Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and Veterans with PTSD. The goal is to provide these seniors, their caretakers/families, and Veterans with a cost-effective strategy to increase mental/emotional stimulation and empowerment, reduce stress, decrease isolation, discover new meaning to their role in society, and improve overall quality of life. Created in 2014, MMM targets the rapidly growing population afflicted with the neurodegenerative diseases that include Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other dementias. The project has expanded to include patients of PTSD as well. It is estimated that 5.4 million people of all ages suffer from Alzheimer's alone, with 1 in 9 among 65 or older having the disease. With this number projected to triple by 2050 alongside an aging population (alz.org), the RAND Corporation estimates a societal cost of $159 Billion associated with treating these diseases in the US alone. Similarly, Parkinson's disease afflicts as many as one million Americans, costing nearly $25 billion each year. Every 66 seconds, someone in the United States develops dementia. It is MMM's observation, that participating in MMM's programs can improve outcomes of traditional treatment regimes, forestall seniors from entering isolated nursing homes, and cut possible healthcare costs for expensive treatment. With an increasing market and crucial need to find solutions to the issue of neurodegeneration with aging, the demand for MMM's novel methods and service is expected to increase. MMM has 18 bands either active or in formation. We are now partnered with several Rotary Clubs across the nation that have formed and parented MMM bands. With this blueprint in place, we plan to move forward promoting our project to Rotary International Clubs both nationally and globally.”
