Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

No other committees with the authority to act on behalf of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The board of directors reviews and approves the form 990 prior to its filing. The form 990 was authorized and signed by the organization's board chair.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The board of directors requires an annual declaration from all board members and senior management as to the existence and disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest. The board members sign a disclosure statement. Any potential conflicts are discussed by the dis-interested board members, while the party in potential conflict is required to leave the room. Board meeting minutes will document the discussion and decision making process. In the event of a potential conflict, procedures to obtain competitive bids and diligence on fair market value will be established.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Process for hiring new staff that consists of the leadership team (director-level staff) defining and approving a job description and salary range, with board input on postings for director-level staff, soliciting potential candidates via advertisement and networking, and candidate interviews. Please note that when changes to the executive director's salary are discussed, the board conducts these discussions during an executive session at which the executive director is not present.

IRS990/Desc0BFP BRINGS TOGETHER MEMBER STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS IN A POWERFUL GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT TO SHIFT SOCIETY BEYOND COAL, OIL, AND GAS AND ACHIEVE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR ALL. BY EMPOWERING, CONNECTING, AND ACTIVATING LEADERS ACROSS THE CLIMATE MOVEMENT, BFP IS HELPING TO BUILD A SOCIAL MOVEMENT THAT CAN CONFRONT THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY AND SHOW OUR LEADERS THAT WE DEMAND BOLD ACTION IN THIS TIME OF CRISIS. OUR THREE PROGRAMS ARE 350 MASSACHUSETTS, COMMUNITIES RESPONDING TO EXTREME WEATHER ("CREW") AND POLLUTERS PAY. DURING 2021, BFP WAS THE HOME OF DIVEST ED, THE TRAINING AND STRATEGY HUB FOR STUDENT DIVESTMENT ACTIVISTS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. THIS PROGRAM WAS TRANSITIONED TO ANOTHER ORGANIZATION IN NOVEMBER 2021. IN ADDITION, DURING 2021, THE BETTER FUTURE PROJECT ACTED AS THE STATE CONVENING ORGANIZATION ("SCO") IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE GREEN NEW DEAL NETWORK ("GNDN"), AND IN THAT ROLE AS THE SCO CONVENED A COALITION OF ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TOWARD THE GOALS OF A GREEN NEW DEAL ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE, CREATING JOBS, AND ADVANCING JUSTICE. THE COALITION FORMED IN SERVICE OF THIS GRANT IS KNOWN AS THE MASS RENEWS ALLIANCE. 350 MASSACHUSETTS: 350 MASSACHUSETTS ("350 MASS") IS OUR STATEWIDE CLIMATE-ACTION VOLUNTEER NETWORK. 350 MASS EDUCATES THE PUBLIC AROUND KEY CLIMATE AND ENERGY POLICIES, INCLUDING THE NEED TO CENTER EQUITY AND JUSTICE AS CORE PARTS OF CLIMATE SOLUTIONS. VOLUNTEER LEADERS IN OUR 17 NODES OF 350 MASS HELP ACHIEVE LOCAL POLICY VICTORIES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. COMMUNITIES RESPONDING TO EXTREME WEATHER ("CREW"):THE REALITIES OF CLIMATE CHANGE HAVE FORCED PEOPLE ACROSS THE WORLD TO ACCEPT A NEW 'NORMAL', BUT LITTLE IS BEING DONE TO EDUCATE AND EQUIP COMMUNITIES WITH THE RESOURCES THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED. WE WORK WITH CITIES AND TOWNS, HOUSES OF WORSHIP, LIBRARIES, CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS, AND EVERYDAY CITIZENS THROUGH EDUCATIONAL, SERVICE, AND PLANNING ACTIVITIES TO HELP COMMUNITIES ENHANCE THEIR SOCIAL RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF CLIMATE IMPACTS. WE BRING TOGETHER INTERFAITH LEADERS TO HOST AN INTERFAITH SUMMIT ON VULNERABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE.WE LAUNCHED OUR CLIMATE RESILIENCE HUB PROGRAM, WITH ALMOST 20 HUBS IN MASSACHUSETTS AND AN ADDITIONAL 25 HUBS IN 18 OTHER STATES, THANKS TO OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. THESE HUBS ARE WORKING TO PREPARE THEIR COMMUNITIES FOR EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS AND OTHER IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, OUTREACH, AND EDUCATION. WE WERE EXCITED TO PARTNER WITH THE MASSACHUSETTS LIBRARY SYSTEM TO HOST AND SUPPORT 50 WELL-ATTENDED VIRTUAL EVENTS DURING CLIMATE PREPAREDNESS WEEK 2020 AND PARTNERED WITH OTHER NON-PROFITS TO HELP IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES TO GAIN ACCESS TO REMOTE COOLING SUPPORT DURING THE COVID ERA.POLLUTERS PAY:THE PRINCIPLE OF POLLUTERS PAY IS TO MAKE THOSE WHO MAKE A MESS BE THE ONES TO CLEAN IT UP. FOR DECADES, FOSSIL FUEL CORPORATIONS HAVE MADE RECORD PROFITS WHILE DESTROYING OUR SHARED ENVIRONMENT. AND FOR DECADES, TAXPAYERS HAVE FOOTED THE BILL FOR CLEANING UP THE MESS. BFP ADVOCATES FOR STRONG LEGISLATION TO ENSURE THAT THE PROFITABLE FOSSIL FUEL CORPORATIONS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.MARA:AS THE SCO, IN 2021, THE BFP STAFF PROVIDED SERVICES FOR THE COALITION COORDINATION, FACILITATION, AND PROGRAM DELIVERY AND RECEIVED COMPENSATION FROM THE GNDN GRANT, AND THE COALITION MARA HIRED STAFF TO SERVICE THE COALITION, FOR WHICH BFP ACTED AS A FISCAL SPONSOR STAFF FOR THE COALITION BECAME BFP EMPLOYEES.IN 2022, THE BETTER FUTURE PROJECT AGREED TO TRANSFER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING THE STATE CONVENING ORGANIZATION FOR THE MASS RENEWS ALLIANCE TO A PARTNER ORGANIZATION, NEIGHBOR 2 NEIGHBOR ("N2N"). NEIGHBOR 2 NEIGHBOR RECEIVED THE 2022 GRANT FROM THE GNDN. IN JUNE OF 2022, THE STAFF FOR THE MASS RENEWS ALLIANCE TRANSITIONED FROM BEING EMPLOYEES OF BFP TO BEING EMPLOYEES OF NEIGHBOR 2 NEIGHBOR.BFP AND N2N HAVE AGREED TO TRANSFER ANY REMAINING BALANCES FROM THE 2021 GRANT FROM BFP TO N2N, AFTER COSTS INCURRED BY BF
