Activity 2

Training community leaders and building statewide power to combat usury with united valley interfaith project:gsop executive council members and volunteers meet every month with leaders and volunteers from a sister organization in the northern part of the state to identify key community concerns, conduct joint training sessions and plan a statewide strategy to oppose the return of high interest rate "payday" and car title loans to the state. Members journeyed to the state capital several times a week during the legislative session to meet with legislators, speak with elected officials and press their case. A bill which would have allowed payday lending shops to charge up to 400% interest in new hampshire was defeated.

Activity 3

Housing issues: gsop staff and volunteers conducted policy research on housing polices in effect in new hampshire's largest cities as well as at the state level. Staff and volunteers analyzed these polices and crafted suggested changes in policies and practices affecting residents of public and private housing. These suggestions were shared with public housing residents, housing authorizes and the general public though 10 public education workshops and forums and articles in the local media. Meetings held every other week with public housing residents of manchester and monthly in nashua. Several workshops on safe housing and bed bug issues were offered to the general public. Other projects: statewide conference on bed bugs and integrated pest management.
