Mission and Program Overview

Mission

CALSO Community, Inc. (CALSO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to break the greatest barriers disadvantaged and marginalized populations face on their journey to success. Whether these challenges are linked to access to quality education, livable jobs, primary healthcare or affordable housing, CALSO aspires to empower each and every individual to reach their full potential so they can thrive. Our double-bottom-line approach is based on innovative, sustainable business models to address today's greatest social and environmental issues.Since its creation, CALSO has been working on two main verticals:- Workforce development programs to address the unemployment issue in the Bay Area by reducing the skills gaps with programs that provide educational and employment services to those in need. - Support social entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations through accelerators.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Wise SV - In 2015, CALSO and JobTrain, Inc. (a 501(c)(3) organization based in Menlo Park, CA) jointly launched WISE SV, a social enterprise providing long-term unemployed and underemployed people with on-the-job training in the restaurant and catering industry. Beyond a paycheck, WISE SV offers socio-professional support, such as assistance in job search and placement services, personal coaching, and career development. 85 people benefit annually from our yearlong program. Our aim is to bring people back to the job market with a job placement rate of 85%. WISE SV has been set up as a separate legal entity, owned by both CALSO (50%) and JobTrain (50%). CALSO invested $500 in WISE SV. CALSO and JobTrain also raised grant money from Google.org ($600,000) and eBay Foundation ($20,000) for this project.$0$8,270
Restore Oakland - In 2015, CALSO has been partnering with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Oakland) and ROC United (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2001) to set up Restore Oakland. Restore Oakland aims at providing underserved African-American communities of East Oakland with on-the-job training and employment opportunities in the restaurant industry. Unlike most national training programs that focus on entry-level jobs, Restore Oakland will focus on training workers for jobs in the fine dining restaurant industry that provides our trainees with livable wages and greater advancement opportunities. CALSO has been working on the feasibility study and the budget of the project to help Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and ROC United finalize the project and raise grant money in order to launch the program.$0$3,639
Colors NOLA - CALSO has been partnering with ROC United to set up COLORS NOLA. COLORS NOLA aims at providing unemployed people with on-the-job training and employment opportunities in the fine dining restaurant industry, while contributing to the economic revitalization of the New Orleans area. CALSO has started supporting ROC United by working on the feasibility study and budget of the project.$0$2,717
Drones & Good - At the end of 2015, CALSO launched a new workforce development program called Drones & Good. Drones & Good aims at providing vocational training to veterans who are willing to transition to a civilian career in the drone industry. Veteran trainees learn the fundamentals about UAVs (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle), their regulatory framework, the flight dynamics, the software and technical features, to name a few. They also follow a field-based training to understand safety and weather issues and experience different missions with companies from various sectors. They eventually learn advanced techniques and maintenance as well as basics about post-flight data processing. CALSO has been partnering with Swords to Plowshares, a community-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides counselling and case management, employment and training, housing and legal assistance to more than 3,000 veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area each year. In December 2015, CALSO received a grant ($10,000) from eBay Foundation (via Silicon Valley Community Foundation) for this project.$0$420
Tarmac TX - As part of our action to support social entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations, CALSO has been working with 3M to set up an accelerator for social entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations in Austin. In partnership with 3M, we have launched Tarmac TX, a one-of-a-kind accelerator for technology startups developing a product or service addressing some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges of our times. Based in Austin (Texas), our 9-month program offers selected startups and nonprofit organizations free support services, including a co-working space, events & workshops, mentorship and networking opportunities in both the Tech and the Social ecosystems. The grant from 3M was awarded in December 2015 and the project started in February 2016.$0$0
