Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The third program service accomplishment focused on the fall and winter months of October, November, and December. One major program event was held in each of these months. In October, the focus turned to the annual Haigler Fall Tumbleweed Festival. Held on the Haigler Musems grounds the last 7 years, the first festival was a fundraiser to get the museums underway in the Village of Haigler. These museums now include three---One-Room Country Schoolhouse Museum, Haigler Cornerstone Museum, and the Haigler Jail. Property was donated by private individuals for these projects. In the next two years, these properties/museums will become a part of the Haigler Community Foundation - and owned and operated by the Foundation. In November, the first Haigler Gun and Craft Show was held at the Cornerstone Center. Over 500 people from throughout the tri-state area attended this event. Vendors filled the entire facility and gymnasium. The community support for this event was overwhelming, and the 2nd Show is already planned and booked for November, 2015. The December event was a Winter Holiday Festival at the Cornerstone Center. This event closed the 2014 year--the first year of operation for the Haigler Community Foundation. Program service accomplishments this first year of operation have centered on activities at the Cornerstone Center for Community Service. The six major events described in these program service accomplishments have kept the doors of the Cornerstone Center open for the communities we serve. Many program service expenses were covered by volunteers and/or business sponsors. In addition, the facility has offered educational classes, open recreation programs, library programs, rentals, operation of the Sunshine Thrift, developed partnerships with local community colleges for proctoring classes, and has become a wifi hot spot for the community. The Haigler Community Foundation Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and community volunteers look forward to the second year of operation in 2015. With the IRS designation of 50l(c)(3) status for the Haigler Community Foundation, there will be new opportunities for growth and service.$6,000$4,000
The first major program service accomplishment is a look at how the Haigler Community Foundation came into existence. The community of Haigler, Nebrska has a small rural population of less than 200, is known as 'the cornerstone of Nebraska', borders Kansas and Colorado, and serves communities throughout this tri-state area. Rich in history and heritage, this small village had made, and continues to make a difference in the lives of the people it serves. In the spring of 2013, the last of the Haigler Public Schools closed. The land, former Haigler Elementary School, and historic gymnasium built in 1936 were placed on the market for sale. A local group (with a track record of making things happen in this community) was asked to submit a proposal to the Dundy County Stratton Public Schools Board of Education for the purchase of the public school facilities--with the mission to preserve and re-purpose for community enhancement and economic development. On November 11, 2013 the Board of Education voted unanimously to accept the proposal. The huge task of raising the dollars to purchase the school facilities and hopefully another $20,000 for operating expenses the first year had to be accomplished. After much research and many meetings, the decision was made to organize the Haigler Community Foundation, the repurposed former school facility would become The Cornerstone Center for Community Service. The new owner would be the Haigler Community Foundation. The process of organizing the Haigler Community Foundation began--along with the task of fundraising. A matching $15,000 grant was received. Fund drives to Haigler Alumni and friends of the Haigler community began. Volunteers assembled and mailed 500 letters requesting financial support for the Cornerstone Center project. On January 28, 2014, notification was received from Secretary of State, State of Nebraska, certifying the Haigler Community Foundation as a nonprofit public benefit corporation filing Articles of Incorporation. The next 4 months of February, March, April, and May of 2014 focused entirely on continued organization of the Haigler Community Foundation and fund raising for the matching grant and more. Also, during these 4 months, community volunteers were cleaning, repairing, and changing the culture of the school facility to the Cornerstone Center for Community Service. The school district had auctioned all contents, so the Haigler Community Foundation would have a 'bare bones' facility. Partnerships were developed, a community thrift store was organized, and furnishings for the facility began. Memorial weekend has always been the traditional Haigler Alumni weekend when alumni return home to their hometown of Haigler, Nebraska. So for 2014, volunteers worked hard to have the Cornerstone Center ready for celebrating the grand re-opening of the facility for the community. Over 300 people attended the grand opening. Many expenses of this grand opening were paid by volunteers and business sponsors. By May 30, 2014, the dollars had been raised to make payment in full for the former school facility--now the Cornerstone Center for Community Service in Haigler. The land/property was now deeded to the Haigler Community Foundation. This was the beginning of program service accomplishments.$4,000$3,200
The summer months of June, July, and August, 2014 continued to see the growth and development of both the Haigler Community Foundation and the Cornerstone Center for Community Service. Working with Dundy County Community Foundation, additional grants were written and received from the WalMart Foundation, the Knights of Aksarben Community, and others. A partnership with the Dundy County Library for a satellite Haigler Depot Library at the Cornerstone Center was developed, and work began on shelving, books, dvds, furnishings, and materials for this project. Some rental of rooms and facilities for wellness and exercise classes, meetings, family reunions, and birthday parties were beginning to happen. News media partnerships helped local communities become aware of the Sunshine Thrift store at the Center. Website ideas, Facebook page ideas, and Haigler Blog ideas for online communications were beginning. Knowing that additional income would be needed to cover operating expenses of the Foundation and the Cornerstone Center; other major events were planned by community volunteers, Haigler Community Foundation Board of Directors, and Advisory Council. These included a 4th of July Holiday Celebration and Labor Day weekend Celebration with a Homemade IceCream Social. Each community event had at least 200 attendees, Each event was free admission; with free will donations to the Haigler Community Foundation appreciated. This philosophy has worked very well for the Foundation.$3,000$1,500
