Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Secret Knowledge offers educational programming to the public. Formed in 2013 amid rapid city growth and looming gentrification, Secret Knowledge works to transform the world around us into a more equitable place where creative people from diverse backgrounds are empowered to lead fulfilling lives and succeed on their own terms. We believe that investing directly in education to support artists, musicians, and creative workers in their struggle to grow their working livelihoods is the very best way support arts & culture in our region. Creative people can grow WITH cities. Secret Knowledge offers classes, workshops,and cultural programming designed to educate attendees; hosts an annual conference, The Secret Knowledge Conference, which brings together creative workers for community connection and professional training; and develops innovative programming to help empower creative adults throughout the year. Creative business education is something people need. Talent alone isn't enough.

2016 Secret Knowledge Conference - A full day of utterly useful professional workshops and opportunities for peer learning aimed at creative people. Secret Knowledge had 35 attendees at the conference.$0$2,958
The Whisper Posse & Secret Knowledge Exchange Happy Hour Events - Secret Knowledge launched an innovative 6-month long program aimed at helping creative entrepreneurs do the hard, brave work it takes to grow their careers. Participants worked with staff and volunteers to develop tactical plans and accomplish the emotional growth needed to grow their creative businesses. Our pilot program had five participants: A fine jewlery maker, a graphic designer, two musicians, and comic book artist. At the request of conference participants Secret Knowledge launched a series of Four Quarterly SECRET KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE HAPPY HOUR events which bring the creative community together to share career insights. These events served 50 participants. A participant who initially attended the Happy Hour and later joined the Whisper Posse cohort had this to say of his experience:"One year ago I went to the Secret Knowledge Exchange and realized I had the support and abilities to create my own freelance business. Life couldn't be better!"$0$1,540

Changes were approved establishing a new class of Director called the Founding Director and naming Secret Knowledge's founder to that position. Minor changes were made to the nomination, election, and removal process for directors. Bylaws were updated to reflect the reality of how Secret Knowledge functions and clarifying leadership roles; we're an entrepreneurial nonprofit lead by a visionary founder.”
