Workshops & First Annual Secret Knowledge Conference - The conference was attended by 50 creative professionals & 25 volunteers (including expert instructors). An additional 15 people attended short workshops offered earlier in the year. In 2015 we launched the first annual Secret Knowledge Conference, which brought together creative professionals from a broad range of backgrounds, for a day of community connection and utterly useful professional development. Response to the conference was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees have requested new programming throughout 2016 and many plan on returning to the conference in the year to come. Attendees report greater ease in planning their creative careers and greater understanding of aspects of their creative work: QUOTES FROM ATTENDEES: "I have been working in the music industry for more than 15 years and people have tried numerous times to explain the complicated minutiae of music licensing to me. Thanks for the dose of clarity and empowerment, Secret Knowledge!" - Anna Fritz, folksinger/cellist "The Secret Knowledge Conference really delivered. I got a lot out of the workshops but the real "secret" of the conference, for me, was what I learned from talking with the other attendees. Applying what I learned at the conference made planning the next year so much easier. I finally know what my next steps are and how to go about taking them." - Rebecca Van Damm, Musician QUOTE FROM THE OREGONIAN: "As our town grows into the 21st century, artists and creative types will need to grow with it. For those still struggling to get by in the city, a bit of Secret Knowledge may just be what they need. " The Oregonian - 11/11/15$0$9,637
Video Lessons - In 2015 our training videos were watched by over 7,500 people thanks to $115,349 in in-kind contributed advertising services. Secret Knowledge produced two new creative business education video lessons in 2015, based on our workshop series "Skills You Need to Make It Here" and promoted these and our previously released video lessons as free skills building resources via our website, SecretKnowledge.org and on YouTube. A generous grant of online advertising services promotes these free lessons to creative people nationwide. The goal of these lessons is to help creative people promote their work more effectively, market their services & creations, set prices, increase sales, and grow their working livelihoods.$0$856

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Statement from Noah Kleiman, made under penalty of perjury, the following is a true account: Secret Knowledge is a very small nonprofit run by a single staff person, with no budget for professional tax preparation or outside accounting services. We're filing our 990-EZ after the deadline because of a simple mistake, one we won't ever repeat. We request any penalties be waived as our late filing was due to a reasonable cause and not do to any willful neglect. We were unaware of the May 15th filing deadline this year due to a change of our address during 2015, combined with our relative inexperience preparing the 990-EZ as a relatively new organization, which lead to the possibly incorrect assumption that the IRS would send a notification letter and/or forms in advance of the filing deadline each year - in a similar fashion to the notification we received during our first complete tax year, the prior year - whatever the case may be, we didn't receive a notification of the filing deadline this year and made the mistake of thinking it was June 15th rather than May 15th. It's possible a notification was sent out, but was lost in the change of address shuffle with the post office. This is entirely plausible given that we discovered two other incidents in the last year of lost correspondence (from donors we knew were sending contributions) due to problems with mail delivery to our new location. Secret Knowledge dutifully notified the IRS of the address change last year. The mail delivery problem with the post office has been addressed. In early June we investigated the filing deadline directly, by checking the IRS website, and were shocked to discover it had already passed. We immediately set to work preparing this filing. We at Secret Knowledge endeavor to be diligent in filing on time. Had we discovered the looming deadline in time to request an automatic 3-month extension we would have taken steps to file for that extension, and then followed up with a complete filing in a matter of days. With the exception of this filing we are aware of no prior incidents of missed filing deadlines. We've dutifully worked to provide clear and accurate returns to the IRS and other agencies. In addition to filing our 990-EZ forms for the last two years, we also provided a timely and well received response to a random quality check IRS audit of our 501(c)(3) application which covered our operations in 2014, this was in November of 2015, as scarce organizational resources were focused on launching our first annual conference. Given the surprise of being audited in our very first program year, we pay very close attention to communications which arrive from the IRS. We're not a careless agency, just small. Sometimes in the course of this work we make mistakes. This mistake was a reasonable mistake, not a negligent one. It's a symptom of small capacity, not inattention or willful ignorance. We've pulled out all the stops to correct it right away. We ask for your understanding and compassion on behalf of the people we work so hard to serve; the impact of the statutory penalty on our important mission would be substantial, and would directly impact our program offerings this year. Thank you for your consideration and understanding in resolving this matter. Noah Kleiman, Founding Executive Director
