Part III response or note to any other line in Part III

Part III, Line 1: Continued...Empowered by choice, young people create their won goals and steps to reach them. The workshops is followed with a variety of resources and opportunities that support their commitment to CHOOSE 180. The most common types of feedback that young people give after the workshop are: I didnt expect to benefit so much from todaythank you for being so real. Im choosing 180 for myself and for my family. This was a whole lot better than court. Part III, Line 4a: grace over guilt. Community over conviction. Possibility over problems. As an alternative to the court process, young people across King County have the opportunity to attend a CHOOSE 180 workshop. At the workshop, storytelling is our secret sauce community storytellers, with lived experiences in the system, break down walls to foster an atmosphere of hope, truth, vulnerability, inspiration, and healing. Driven by the immeasurable value of everyday life, we piloted a program designed to advocate for youth charged with their first felony, called C.E.D.A.R. Juvenile court is a monstrous progression that can be drug out for months, consisting of multiple hearings that remove youth from school and their parents from work. This process is emotionally exhausting and poses complex difficulties for families who are already hurdling obstacles on a daily basis. In the written proposal to launch C.E.D.A.R., King County states that, the traditional juvenile court process is slow and struggles to deliver timely interventions to youth and families. Children get caught up in a legal process that largely caters to form over substance. We are proud to be a primary solution for families navigating the system providing steadfast support for youth so they have the tools necessary to reset on the path of opportunity. In 2019, we began working inside schools with students at risk of suspension and expulsion, to intentionally combat the school to prison pipeline. The ACLU describes the school-to-prison-pipeline as a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and world benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished, and pushed out. In our five-week school program, students are pulled in close and not pushed away. In place of detention and expulsion, students utilize a space where internal reflection and support is available to them. Students gain tools necessary to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Through our compass curriculum, students assess their goals, their assets, and their obstacles. Inspired by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, students dive deep into self-healing work through a set of questions that are asked on week one. What do I believe about myself? How does my belief about myself affect me emotionally? How do my emotions affect the choices I make? How do my collective choices affect my behavior?(Back to the beginning) How does my behavior affect what I believe about myself? In a safe setting, students begin to reframe the narratives that contribute to their emotions, choices, and behaviors. With a new sense of self, students begin to gain confidence regarding school and their future. They create the steps they will take to reach their goals. After the five weeks, students who may need additional resources are supported on an ongoing basis, so they continue to gain confidence in themselves, receive any necessary resources, and ultimately stay in school. Part III, Line 4b: Empowered by choice, young people create their won goals and steps to reach them. The workshops is followed with a variety of resources and opportunities that support their commitment to CHOOSE 180. The most common types of feedback that young people give after the workshop are: I didnt expect to benefit so much from todaythank you for being so real. Im choosing 180

IRS990/Desc0When it comes to the justice system, we imagine a future where 180s are fostered. We aim to replace convictions, court, adjudication, and criminal records, along with any other systems intended to punish rather than support a young persons future together with our partners, weve worked to transform the process of diversion for young people 12-24 years old who have committed a misdemeanor. We scratched the worn-out, punitive routine all together and offer a simple method of restoration in our CHOOSE 180 workshops: grace over guilt. Community over conviction. Possibility over problems. As an alternative to the court process, young people across King County have the opportunity to attend a CHOOSE 180 workshop. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0We are well known for our diversion work that re-envisioned our criminal legal system penalizes youth people. Historically, diversion opportunities were extended exclusively to those who committed what the juvenile legal system deems as a misdemeanor a low-level offense. Most people are in favor of creating positive paths for youth being charged with low-level crimes, but when it comes to felonies, there is a different train of thought. The assumption is often that youth charged with felonies are not worthy of the same opportunities. Our fundamental principle is that everyone deserves a second chance, and everyone needs a champion for their future. People who are engaging in the destructive behavior are often victims of trauma and multiple types of abuse. We believe that young people are capable of a 180 when they are brought in close and are given space to address trauma. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O...

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5Part III, Line 1: Continued...Empowered by choice, young people create their won goals and steps to reach them.
