| 1. The RPRC team went back to Sarangani Province, Mindanao for the second timeA. On January 2, 2019, the first RPRC team of seven members started the first outreach by opening a new area in the island of Bohol. This area suffered a lot of damage from a big earthquake in October, 2013. The group which consisted of a few families and young people, was a small community but they were eager to learn the natural farming system. We got them started with the basics of natural farming which included family nutrition, composting, garden formats, soil preparation, and preparing seedlings properly.B. From Bohol Island, the team was joined by other team members in Cebu and the group proceeded to Palawan Island. The first training area was in Ethnos, a sitio of Aborlan Municipality on the southern part of Palawan. Several community leaders and their assistant leaders from the north and the south areas of Palawan Island came to the training. The host of our training site, Philip and Levy Lim, just moved in to this area in 2017. Their vision is to be a training center for tribal students so that these students can go back to their tribal cultures and help the people with their community development. Hence, RPRC formed a partnership with Philip and Levy because their vision is aligned with the RPRC vision. After the training, our coordinator, Victor Ababa, called and reported that the participants became very enthusiastic to start and implement what they learned. This is the type of response that RPRC always wants to hear. We keep our modules simple, doable, and duplicable.C. From Aborlan outreach, the RPRC team split into two groups. One group proceeded to an area further south of Palawan in Bintat Kharis, Rizal. And the other team proceeded to Cebu to pick up more volunteers that would proceed to another RPRC outreach area in Sarangani Province, Mindanao. It was the second visit to Bintat Kharis. The team saw some progress in the projects, but it was very apparent that they were facing obstacles of various pests including chickens and a pig-like looking night animals that eat the worms in the vermibeds at night. The community even put up nets around their gardens to control the chicken pests.D. The team that went to Sarangani Province held a training in one of the farmer's area in Maitum, Sarangani Province. Over a hundred people attended this training. It was very rewarding to see that the farmer who hosted the training, had a successful vermi culture already and his gardens were growing. This meant that he successfully implemented the priciples that he learned from RPRC the year before.E. The two teams from Sarangani and Palawan converged together in Davao City and departed for the last outreach area in Agusan Sur Province Mindanao. This was our second visit to this area and our team members were pleased to see a lot pf progress in their gardens and vermi beds. More new participants also joined the training.MID YEAR VISITS: mid-July to first week of August, 2019Along with a small team of four, I went to do follow-up visits to our outreach areas in Palawan and Mindanao. In Palawan, our coordinator informed us of a big drought that even caused the loss of lives of a few adult and children. Also so many of our beneficiaries could not even continue on with their garden projects simply because of lack of water. Safe water for drinkingwas very scanty.Hence, a well drilling expert from Florida came to study the terrains and locations of our farmers in order to fully assess the drought situation and to come up with the right recommendations on how to make water available both for agriculture and for safe drinking. The follow-up visit to Mindanao was very productive as well. RPRC had strongly forged a partnership with the local government unit(LGU) in Kiamba, Sarangani Province and the during the meeting, counterparts were defined. Then RPRC also forged a partnership with another organization who has workers helping in the surrounding rural and tribal areas. The LGU veterinarian and agriculturist agreed to conduct a Farmers Field School in our designated model farm in Loma, Kiamba to give our farmers a head start. We decided that an RPRC team will conduct a follow-up training in January 2020.The trip to Agusan was another productive trip; meetings with the ongoing beneficiaries and also meetings with interested community leaders who wanted to enroll in the program. But the main highlight of this trip in this area is the stronger network established with the government both in the provincial and local level. They agreed to do the monitoring for our farmers. This is of utmost importance to RPRC because our role is to train and help our farmers get started but we do not intend to keep coming indefinitely; we believe in hand up to create sustainability among our farmers. On a networking process in the national level, RPRC met with the Agricultural Training Institute centers in Aklan and in Mindoro. The purpose of the meetings was to also forge a partnership with this national agency so they could monitor our communities. Here ATI agreed to be our team co-trainers in Jan. 2020.2. Mid year follow-up and assessment of tribal areas in the Province of Agusan del SurIn July, Cora Carter went back to the Philippines to do a mid-year follow-up and to assess and also open new areas for RPRC programs. The first leg of the trip was in the island of Bohol where Cora and a volunteer, Emma Caballero, worked in Cancatac Elementary School for four days teaching them gardening and implementing the principles right away. RPRC provided the tools and seeds for the school. The next leg of the itinerary was to the island of Palawan where Cora assessed a mountain area in the town of Rizal for suitability of the RPRC programs. Cora met with the leaders and inspected the actual area as well. Cora also visited the areas of the OM ministries. The next itinerary was to Agusan del Sur Province and Cora held a seminar for three communities and also assessed their areas. These areas, if approved by RPRC, will be prepared for a team outreach in January of 2018.The next part of the follow-up visit was to Sarangani Province. On the way there from Davao, Cora and volunteer, Ma'am Emma Caballero, met up with the Sulong Tribu Government Agency at the MBRLC farm in Bansalan, Davao, so the the government employees could visit some demo farms as part of educational tour. The group also visited the Lao Demo farm in the area. In Sarangani Province, an additional focus was given to the Badtasan Elementary School where parents, teachers, and students were trained how to do vermiculture. Cora and Emma visited the sites of Datu Mapangal and Datu Wali, the two areas where the first goat houses were built.3. Approval of the new areas to start RPRC programs and implementation beganWhen Cora came back to the US, she submitted her report on the assessments of the potential new areas. Both Palawan and Agusan areas were all approved by the team leadership. By October, some aspects of the projects already began in these areas. These included composting, vermiculture, and building of the chicken houses. Fifteen beneficiaries were chosen in Agusan. All necessary tools were purchased for the Agusan and Palawan areas. | $0 | $54,896 |
