| A. May, 2021Three RPRC volunteers from the USA travelled to several communities along the Maranon River which is one of the two main contributors of the mighty Amazon River. First, the RPRC team had to fly from Lima to Iquitos to connect with the mission workers of the Youth with A Mission (YWAM) who are involved in the river ministries. Their names are Julio and Yola. From Iquitos, the group travelled by van for two hours to the small municipality of Nauta; and then a boat took the group to La Granja which is a 35-hectare farm operated by Julio and Yola. La Granja became a base for the RPRC team for several days from where they launched several trips to various communities by boat. One of the trips lasted several days as the team went farther up the Maranon River. Julio, Yola, a farm hand, and a translator had equipped the boat for such along trip so that the group would be doing their cooking, eating, toileting, and sleeping in the boat. At times, the boat became a place of meetings as well.A critical part of this assessment trip was meeting with community leaders and explaining the RPRC programs to them; and then listening to what they perceive as the needs of their communities. The team also took enough time to walk around the communities to see what community projects they have. Several families were visited by the team which gave insight as to what vegetables they are already growing and what animals they are raising. B. October, 2021The RPRC assessment trip in May had helped RPRC evaluate whether the RPRC programs are suitable to the need of economic development of the Amazon communities. The unanimous conclusion was positive. Four months later, an RPRC team of 5 from the US embarked once again to a jungle trip in the Amazon. The team was made of a veterinarian whose expertise was on chicken production; a veterinary technician who also knows agriculture by experience in her own farm; a land developer who also have experiences in cattle raising; an agricultural engineer who also does some farming; a chemical engineer whose career was on environmental safety; and one RPRC board member. The main goal for this trip was to conduct training on chicken production, seed saving, composting, and nutrition. Thirty-five farmers participate in the week-long training from morning till afternoon. The RPRC team was very impressed at how the participants were very involved in listening and asking their questions. One of the training sessions was devoted to giving all the participants every opportunity to express and explain all the challenges that they are facing in the farming. And the team spent extra time with individual farmers to be sure that the issues are really understood so that the RPRC team would be able to find answers when they go back to the USA.Early morning, the team got up as early as six o'clock to go across the river where the lowland farm areas are located. These lowland areas are completely covered by river water from December to June, and then when the water subsides, these areas have the best fertile soil which the farmers take advantage of for a few plants by planting corns and other crops.Spending one-week with the farmers during the training and by also visiting their farms had given a lot of understanding to the team. For example, the team learned that the farmers use mainly corn to feed their chickens. The team is now doing a lot of research on what Amazon plants are available to process as main sources of protein for their livestock.C. PHILIPPINES PROGRAMSThe last agricultural outreach conducted by RPRC in the Philippines was in March 2020 due to country covid restrictions to international travelers. Yet, this did not prevent RPRC from following up with the ongoing projects via Messengers. Resources such as funds for specific projects were sent to deserving farmers.D. SEED SAVING TRAINING IN BERTRAND, MO in August, 2021After several years of helping rural communities, RPRC realized the importance of making farmers seed independent. In 2020 and 2021, several farmers had communicated with RPRC that they did not have access to seeds; therefore, they could not continue planting. This was a sad situation. Since its inception, RPRC had always considered seed saving a critical part of its training modules; however, it look a few more years before a Seed Saving Module was developed and incorporated in the training for the farmers. Moving forward, Seed Saving Training will be conducted for several days instead of just one session during RPRC training to the farmers. | $0 | $17,880 |
