| A. Training and workshops1. A team of volunteers from the USA went back to the island of Leyte previously devastated by a super typhoon to continue the programs on livelihood, health, and education.2. Since training and exposure to modern technology is important, two people from the group called One Way Outreach, our contact organization in Leyte, were brought to another province in the Philippines where organic farms were located. One was the farmer who implemented our Natural Farming techniques which we did a workshop on in January 2014. And the other one is the leader of One Way Outreach. Together with the RPRC team, the group toured and also took workshops three model farms in Negros Occidental. The first farm taught the group that a farmer does not need a huge area of land in order to cultivate a garden or a farm and make it efficient and profitable. And for those who do not have a piece of land, container gardening is another technology taught.Another technology learned by the farmers is the raising of animal-poultry goats, and swine-in an organic way. This means these animals are healthy for human consumption, their habitat does not stink, and the cost to raise them is much lower than using commercial feeds.3. The next group that went for another training were a group of 9 farmers from various rural communities from Leyte. These are the same rural communities RPRC had worked with in 2014 when RPRC went to do relief work after a super typhoon hit the area. The focus of the learning this time is on herbs- identifying, growing, producing, and harvesting of herbs. Also part of the workshop was how to make medicinal forms from the herbs such as ointment and capsules.B. Implementation of the training1. Back to the island of Leyte, the team saw that the model farm was again devastated by another typhoon that hit just a month before. RPRC helped with the restoration of the farm to help the farmer and his family be sufficient again.2. The farmers who were trained on the herbal aspects started collecting various herbs from different areas and replanting them in their garden. Few months later, construction of the first herbal house was completed.C. Agriculture- gardening and animal raising1. Since the presence of an RPRC volunteer is only 2x a year, RPRC team found it necessary to link up with local government agencies that are involved in the agricultural aspects such as Agricultural Training Institute and Department of Agriculture, so that the farmers will have support in their projects as needed. From this networking, several field workers from the office of the Department of Agriculture were able to visit and conduct training among the rural communities. Our main volunteer (the farmer who was trained on the different aspects of natural farming and who owned the model farm) continued to focus her training on one community called Kabaliwan. Five rural farmers trained weekly on fermentation under our main volunteer.2. On the aspect of animal raising, our RPRC team went around several rural communities and gave training on the proper way of raising goats, as opposed to the Filipino traditional and cultural ways.D. Medical program1. Our team from the US brought medical apparatus- thermometers, blood pressure monitor, and basic wound care kits. The reason for this initiative is that RPRC volunteers had discovered that a lot of the village members go to the doctors or hospitals when not necessary or they go when it is already almost too late. As an example, mothers rush their babies to the hospital due to high fever when all they have to do is manage the fever properly. Another example is this: a villager had a small cut but did not know how to do a basic care. Hence, it got infected so bad that finally he had to go to the emergency room or a doctor. This time, the treatment became costly. The team went around several villages and trained the people on wound care, fever management, and healthy diet. Also included in the training is how to use home remedies such as using herbs for their basic ailments.2. In one of these villages, called Balion, a community leader appeared very sick-his fever was very high, his weight was very low, and he looked 'near death'. We brought him to a doctor and the xray revealed that he has TB. Our team nurse suspected that majority of the residents in that village may also have tuberculosis. To act on this concern, an RPRC volunteer went to the city health clinic in order to facilitate the examination of everyone in the village. RPRC shouldered the expenses to get this done, except the medication which was given free by the government.E. Scholarship program-college scholarship was awarded to 10 students. | $0 | $35,332 |
