Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To address, educate, coordinate and provide aid and relief to adults and children in rural communities in the Philippines.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
1. Volunteer training In January, a team of volunteers from the US took a training on FAITH gardening (Food Always in the Home) at the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center located in Bansalan, Davao del Sur. The purpose of the training was for volunteers to learn a gardening format that was based on composting, using little baskets, in the middle of the garden plots. This format was already implemented in some of the rural areas in Mindanao.2. Assessment of tribal areas in Sarangani Province, Mindanao After the FAITH training, the team proceeded to another province 6 hours away to visit some tribal sites and assess suitability of these areas for RPRC programs. The team met with provincial officials and also with local level government officials to find out what are the most impoverished rural tribal areas. Then the team proceeded to visit the sites, some located on the mountains and some on more level areas. The main finding was that the tribes lacked the needed resources-knowhow, seeds, and tools-so they can raise their own food.3. Implementation of the FAITH projects A few days after the evaluation of these areas, additional team volunteers from the US arrived and opened up the RPRC projects. The beginning was a meeting with the community members to hear directly from them on what are the socio-economic problems facing them. They stated again that the basic reasons of their food problems was because they lack seeds, tools, and training on agriculture and animal farming. The team provided the basic training, bought the seeds and the tools, and help the communities dig up the garden area, form the compost baskets, plant the seeds, and then transplant to the plots. In other communities, a rabbit training was conducted. The team found some rabbits in another distant area; hence, the rabbit farming began. In some communities, proper goat care training was conducted and cuttings of goat food was planted in the area. The nontribal surrounding communities were amazed at how the tribal people were able to start their own projects of producing their own food.4. Midyear follow-up By July, a follow-up assessment was done. The communities showed progress in the projects. Two more tribal communities were approved for additional projects. The most significant accomplishments on this trip in Sarangani Province is the assessment conducted among the elementary schools. RPRC approved the initiatives in agricultural programs in the schools; seeds and tools were purchased so these schools can begin their gardening activities.$0$41,836
