On April 20, 2023, IlluminArts and The Wolfsonian-FIU presented Stay On It: A Block Party with Music, Poetry, Dance, and Art. Inspired by artist Roberto Lugo's murals on the exterior facade of The Wolfsonian-FIU, Stay On It transformed 10th Street in South Beach into a block party with live performances, an art installation opening, and Caribbean-themed food trucks - all part of the City of Miami Beach's monthly Culture Crawl. Produced by IlluminArts, the evening's live performance featured an all-star lineup including GRAMMY winning baritone Kenneth Overton, conductor Jacomo Bairos, the Peter London Global Dance Company and the Miami Sound Choir. The musical program culminated in a full-company performance of composer Julius Eastman's monumental Stay On It, which - like Lugo's murals - shone a light on our diverse community.$21,925$40,613

Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, Chief Sandrell Rivers, and Betty Mae Tiger Jumper's work has impacted and transformed Miami and South Florida, creating change for their own - and future - generations. These three musical performances illuminated the intersections among the women's lives as well as their inspirational achievements and contributions. The three performances took place in the Courtyard in Vizcaya's Main House and wove together song and original text by writer Christell Roach. Each performance featured sopranos Brittany Graham and The Jas Sound, as well as mezzo-soprano Elise Quagliata. This was a series of three musical performances. Each concert focused on a different influential woman. March 22 - Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, Founder of The Black Archives (narrated by Rosie Gordon Wallace) March 29 - Betty Mae Tiger Jumper, the first Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida (narrated by Natalia Martinez-Kalinina) April 5 - Chief Sandrell Rivers, a Miami arts advocate (narrated by Miriam King)$6,450$28,077

In this musical performance, IlluminArts explored the layers of meaning beneath, within and beyond the new works Martinez-Canas created for her exhibition, Absence Revealed, at The Bass Museum. The works comprising Absence Revealed came about through two recent personal events in Martinez-Canas' life: the loss of her mother and the chance finding of her Miami home's original wallpaper while renovating. The works highlight physical and emotional processes of excavation: the act of revealing and uncovering, as well as the surfacing of pain, loss and absence. Martinez-Canas created these works by collaging items from her personal archive of found objects, including materials that the artist's mother had taken from Cuba during her exile in 1960, actively engaging with the ideas of memory and loss. The musical program, performed twice during the evening of Thursday, October 20 for the Miami Beach Culture Crawl, included ten new improvisations by internationally renowned cellist Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir, as well as songs by William Bolcom, Gilda Lyons, Hector Campos Parsi, Joseph Schwantner, Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos and others. As a precursor to this event, Thorsteinsdottir led a community improvisation workshop on Monday, October 17 at 6:30 PM at Miami Beach Botanical Garden. This free special workshop was open to all and no previous musical experience was necessary to participate. Thorsteinsdottir is a musician driven by exploration. She is looking to create meaningful and powerful experiences that can touch the soul and can only exist in the moment. Her mission is to create spontaneous compositions, intuitive performances, and experimental collaborations that can cut beyond words and deeply connect people.$14,150$22,438

This concert featured a musical performance inspired by Good Times, a new exhibition by Oolite Arts resident artist Chris Friday. In Good Times, multi-disciplinary artist Friday continued her exploration of the depiction of Black bodies and their presence/absence in contemporary space. Sourcing personal narratives, expressions of popular culture, and communal ritual, Friday utilized drawing, video, illustration, sound, and ceramic sculpture to create installations that prompted the viewer to consider more expansive notions of blackness and where communities - known and unknown - are given a space to dialogue, reflect, and celebrate. The musical performance "We had a time" was a celebration that walked the line among all of the experiences reflected in Friday's work, from the church to the club, and from joy to resolve, in a program featuring the Florida Memorial University Ambassador Chorale, Metropolitan Opera soprano Aundi Marie Moore, pianist Kevin Wayne Bumpers, and cellist Aaron Merritt.$9,685$19,782
