“Illuminarts and oolite arts were thrilled to present diego gutierrez: open up with roomful of teeth on sunday, january 26, 2020 at the faena theater serving 200 attendees. Diego gutierrez: open up was a special musical performance inspired by the artist's solo exhibition hypersensitive romantic, featuring roomful of teeth in their miami debut. Roomful of teeth is a grammy-winning vocal ensemble dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from vocal traditions the world over, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning process, forges a new repertoire without borders. Roomful of teeth highlighted gutierrez' work through a curated music program including selections from caroline shaw's pulitzer prize winning piece, partita for 8 voices. Through this performance and his solo exhibition, diego gutierrez opened up his studio practice, investigating the meaning of how his work functions in a public setting where it might be activated in unexpected ways. He probed the function of painting, synthesizing varied art historical approaches and pushing formal boundaries by tearing surfaces, adding sculptural elements, and re-working subject matter obsessively. This performance was an unforgettable exploration of music, art, process, romance and freedom.”
“Illuminarts launched the illuminartists online recital series serving 850 attendees; an initiative through which illuminarts presented individual singers in concert online, which could be viewed for 5 per concert. All ticket revenue went to the artist, helping to cushion the financial blow caused by the countless cancellations and postponements of performances internationally and throughout the united states. Illuminarts presented singers from the amazing roster of artists who have performed with illuminarts in the past six seasons, as well as artists who will sing with illuminarts next season.”
“Turn of the screw - elijah mccormack, male soprano, is a specialist in early music vocal performance. He most recently appeared with the washington bach consort as the soprano soloist for their performance of bach's christmas oratorio, where he was described as possessing "a voice with the kind of luminosity one longs for in bach" (washington post). He has also performed at the boston early music festival and the american bach soloists academy & festival. Elijah will join illuminarts in the role of miles for the october 2020 production of the turn of the screw at vizcaya”
