Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Technocopia, like other non-profit organizations in the country and the world, faced significant challenges due to the covid 19 pandemic. Fortunately, and due to the innovative nature of makerspaces and creative communities, technocopia preserved through it, solved problems during the ppe crisis, and came out stronger as a result. At the height of stay at home advisory and closure of non-essential businesses state mandate in massachusetts, technocopia, a largely membership based machine shop and tool share, pivoted its operations to produce much needed personal protective equipment. Following the lead of other makerspaces nationwide technocopia led its own ppe making effort that resulted in the production and distribution of almost 9,300 face shields for health care workers in worcester county and all over new england. Technocopia crowdfunded 10,000 and was awarded 35,000 for this effort which could not have been done without the worcester together fund with the greater worcester community foundation and united way and in partnership with the city of worcester. Additionally technocopia could not have done it without the help of the technocopia membership, the worcester center for crafts and several extraordinary individuals technocopia lost 15% of its membership in the 2 months of the state mandated closure, mostly due to members having their own personal economic losses or due to the inability to access our space. Once technocopia safely reopened following the state guidelines and mandates, it quickly regained the 15% loss. By the end of 2020 it also reinstated nearly all of its tool training programs, built back full capacity on all 36 rental bays in its space, and it secured a capital grant of 45,000 for new equipment and facility upgrades. Youth education developed a new branch of online youth programs that secured two grant awards of 5,000 and 20,000 which has served and will continue to serve worcester public schools students. The internship program hosted 5 teenage interns, and 2 dynamy interns. In membership specific efforts technocopia increased its community memberships from 8 to 12, and held two events to build awareness on the free program. Technocopia membership subsidized 2 memberships to allow members who left due to economic loss because of covid to come back. In total technocopia had 148 members in 2020 (this is inclusive to staff members who receive discounted membership). This is up from 116 members in 2019.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN SPACES SUITABLE FOR TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL COLLABORATION; COLLABORATION ON ALL FORMS OF TECHNOLOGY, CULTURE, AND CRAFT, COLLOBORATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW AND/OR EXISTING TECHNOLOGY, CULTURE AND CRAFT, THAT HELPS PROVIDE COMMUNITIES, FAMILIES, AND/OR INDIVIDUALS THE TOOLS AND EXPERTISE NECESSARY TO SUSTAINABLY PROVIDE FOR THE HUMANITARIAN NEEDS OF A COMMUNITY, FAMILY, AND/OR INDIVIDUAL; FREELY SHARE ITS RESEARCH AND DISCOVERIES; USING WHAT IS LEARNED TO TEACH OTHERS, RECRUIT AND DEVELOP TALENTED MEMBERS DEDICATED TO THESE PURPOSES.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1TECHNOCOPIA, LIKE OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD, FACED SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES DUE TO THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC.
