Opportunity zones is based on the bipartisan investing in opportunity act, which was championed by senators tim scott (r-sc) and cory booker (d-nj) and representatives pat tiberi (r-oh) and ron kind (d-wi), who led a regionally and politically diverse coalition of nearly 100 congressional cosponsors. Eig originally developed the concept in 2015 to help address the persistent poverty and uneven recovery that have left too many american communities behind. In 2018, eig published "the state of socioeconomic need and community change in opportunity zones," a detailed baselining of prevailing social and economic conditions across the country's opportunity zones. In addition, eig created a working group of over 70 wide-ranging stakeholder organizations to share opportunity zones best practices, technical information, developments, and facilitate peer-to-peer learning. Eig's 2018 distressed communities index ---------------------------------------- eig released its third annual distressed communities index (dci), a customized dataset created by examaning economic distress throughout the country and made up of interactive maps, infographics, and a report. The dci captures data from more than 25,000 zip codes (those with populations over 500 people) and covers 99 percent, 312 million, of americans. At launch, the dci received prominnent coverage across the country. Escape velocity --------------- eig published an in-depth report and a set of interactive charts illustrating how national growth in the number of jobs and business establishments has been distributed across all types of communities. The report received prominent press coverage. Partnerships and events ----------------------- eig convened important economic research and policy conversations with a wide array of stakeholders throughout the year, including "the 8th annual summit on the economy an "opportunity zones dinner" as part of the rise of the rest 2018 dc summit; and an "opportunity zones state strategy meeting" which was attended by over 50 state and local officials.”
