The marks project (tmp) is an educational not-for-profit which promotes engagement and research in post-ww2 american ceramists by creating, maintaining and continually updating the first online research hub of these makers working 1945 onward. Tmp focuses on the ceramists and their marks. Each is documented with a unique artist's page which may include marks (signatures, stamps, etc), images of work and marks, a chronology, professional biography, list of public collections, bibliography, link to the artist's website, etc. Information is available worldwide for search. Research focuses on both nationally known and regionally known makers. Tmp serves 2 clients:the makers, potter/ceramist, who now have an established research platform to document their work and update it throughout their career; for the deceased maker, posthumous documentation is a professional legacy tool for potters.
Mission: To create and maintain a searchable online database of signatures, marks, work images and biographical information for American mid-20th- and 21st-century studio potters, ceramic artists and artists using the medium of clay working from 1945 onward.Vision: To provide a primary research platform to assist scholars, museum specialists, collectors and creators in the identification and understanding of American studio potters, ceramic artists and artists working in the medium of clay. The Marks Project (TMP) is an educational not-for-profit that documents the work, marks, and histories post-War (1945 onward) American potters, sculptors and conceptual artists who use the medium of clay (the Makers). All is made searchable and freely available to researchers, museum specialists and the public worldwide via www.themarksproject.org . In its 7th full year online, the website is established as the research hub of this material. Each artist is documented by a unique web-page (TMPs Artist

| During 2020, we undertook a website redesign to improve website processing time necessitated by significant increases in User page load time and projected additional future website traffic. During this redesign, we delayed adding new artist pages to avoid duplicate work. Other problems arose and by early 2022, a new designer was hired who moved the project forward with beta testing beginning in summer 2022. Website load time is the focus of the website redesign. The new website with refinement to search functions to improve user experience on all digital devices is on schedule for an initial launch winter 2024. However, despite the disruption in 2022 of slowing website load time, TMP experienced an 11% annual increase in our user base that in 2022 numbered over 145,000. Page views similarly increased 7% to roughly 760,000. Over the same time we were able to increase TMPs international website use reach to 23% with a bounce rate of about 41%. In 2022 TMP:Is in classrooms: TMP is now used as a research tool in both college and high school ceramics programs.Completed a major documentation projects: TMP completed the documentation of the American Museum of Ceramic Arts (AMOCA) ACerS collection on TMP bring 387 objects by 302 potters to search. This project was supported in part by a Center for Craft Research Grant. Expanded its regional museums reach: Collection Search by institution name or the collections documented potters name search brings each listed regional institution and their potters to international search, many for the first time. For example: the Crocker Art Museum, Scripps College Collection, Brunier Museum of Art, etc.Expanded its Board: TMP added key members with needed expertise to the Board of Directors. Among the new members is the Boards first technology director to oversee website development, etc. New Board members include experienced manager of brick-and-mortar institution to initiate development position on Board, author and museum specialist to assist in publicity, etc. In addition, a retired attorney will take on increasing minority potters representation on TMP. Formed an Advisory Board in 2022: TMP Board Vice President Jo Lauria formed an Advisory Board to broadly enhance the pool of expertise available to TMP. Lauria, is a curator, educator and author. The Advisory Board consists of 18 members who are known nationally as educators, authors, clay artists, museum specialists, etc. Two members will concentrate on increasing minority potters representation on TMPs website. One member has helped in wordsmithing promotional and outreach materials while another introduced us to a regional museum with a wealth of regional ceramists. In general members of this group will concentrate on arrange needed areas: Fundraising; promoting website artists ethnic diversity; nomenclature; promoting self-documentation on website by potters; assisting in regional documentation initiatives; etc. | - | $45,767 |
