Each member is required to declare conflicts of interest twice per year, at meetings in January and in July.

Work for the governing board is on a volunteer basis and is uncompensated. Board members who are also employed by the school are only compensated for their work as employees. All salaries are compared against publicly available salary data for the same positions in two local school districts as well as national averages for private schools. They range from 80% of the comparable public school salary for an uncertified teacher or administrator, which is the norm for private schools, to 100% (matching) salary for a certified teacher or administrator. All salaries are evaluated annually in February and March when contracts are renewed for the next school year. They hinge on both education level and years in the classroom, in the same manner as the public school salary schedules.

Board members who are also employed by the school are only compensated for their work as employees. All salaries are compared against publicly available salary data for the same positions in two local school districts as well as national averages for private schools. They range from 80% of the comparable public school salary for an uncertified teacher or administrator, which is the norm for private schools, to 100% (matching) salary for a certified teacher or administrator. All salaries are evaluated annually in February and March when contracts are renewed for the next school year. They hinge on both education level and years in the classroom, in the same manner as the public school salary schedules.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Dear IRS, This 990 form is very late. We are a school - this year has been a nightmare. We actually had to close for the 2020-2021 school year because we could not get enrollment and staffing in place for August due to COVID. 50% of our students dropped out or completely fell off our radar in March and April, and trying to get them back in class was the priority. Our employees also got COVID, and that was a logistical challenge (multiple sick teachers at once) that took priority while classes were in session. The company we pay to do our accounting imploded because most of their staff members got COVID at once, and it took months to get the records we needed from them to complete the 990 filing. I requested them in June, thinking we could file by the extension, and did not receive them until late November. My family experienced not one, but three sequential COVID emergencies, including my spouse being locked out of the country for 9 months (and counting). The other formal Board members and our volunteer parent Board completely checked out this year due to their own family emergencies or just generic COVID panic, and there was nobody available to complete and proof this report in my stead. I am requesting a waiver of the daily late fee due to extenuating circumstances. This is a small private school, and I have been attempting to run it singlehandedly - getting our classes online, trying to make employment contracts work, letting teachers go, trying to plan for restarting classes in 2021. This was honestly the best I could do given the situation. I really did try, but in all honesty - I feel gutted by this year, and trying to fill out a very long form of small boxes when there were so many other things in front of me was just impossible. Because it was not critical, like finding substitutes when our teachers got COVID and trying to get an entire Montessori curriculum online without any notice, it got pushed to the back and here I am, doing final checks and submitting our paperwork on Christmas Eve.
