Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The draft 990 is reviewed by the director of operations and the independent auditors for appropriateness. Once this review is completed, a copy of the draft 990 is distributed to the board of trustees, electronically for review. The chair or the vice chair will respond and address any issues raised by any member of the board of trustees. After all issues have been addressed and resolved, the 990 will be approved for filing by the chairperson. If any changes were made to the draft 990 a new copy of the 990 will be distributed to the board of trustees before filing with irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

It is imperative that mvp, both in reality and in perception, operates solely in the best interests of the students it serves. Any blemish on its reputation will significantly impact the mission of the school. Employees of mvp must be ever mindful of the need to conduct themselves in an honorable manner both in and outside of the school. Employees have an obligation to conduct their affairs within guidelines that prohibit actual or potential conflicts of interest. Actual or potential conflict of interest occurs when an employee is in a position to influence a decision that may result in a personal gain for him or her, for a relative or for anyone else who has a close personal relationship with the employee as a result of mvp business dealings. For the purpose of this policy, a relative or a person with a close personal relationship is any person who is related by blood or marriage, or whose relationship with the employee is similar to that of persons who are related by blood or marriage. No "presumption of guilt" is created by the mere existence of a relationship with an outside firm or vendor. However, if an employee has any influence on transactions involving purchases, contracts, or supplies it is imperative that he or she discloses that relationship to the principal immediately so that safeguards can be established to protect all parties. Common conflicts that employees should avoid include but are not limited to: -using proprietary or confidential information for personal gain or to mvp's detriment -directly or indirectly accepting gifts, loans, services, entertainment, etc. Of more than a minimal value from a vendor or someone seeking to do business with mvp -using mvp's assets or labor for personal use -instances where an employee or an employee's relative or someone with a close personal relationship has a significant ownership in the vendor or firm with which mvp does business -engaging in outside employment that would interfere with the employee's full performance of the work for which he or she is employed by the school -in addition to the rules listed above, all mvp employees and trustees must comply with the conflict of interest policy as described in exhibit a of this document. All directors, officers and trustees of the organization must adhere to the conflict of interest policy. Any individual with a possible conflict should make a prompt, full and frank disclosure to the board of trustees and through an annual disclosure of any potential conflicts. Such disclosure shall include all relevant and material facts known to such person that might be construed to be adverse to the board's interest. If it is determined that there is a potential conflict, the individual would be excluded from the deliberations or voting on said conflict. Any restrictions that are placed on the individual with a conflict are detailed and documented.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The board of trustees, at the end of each school year, evaluates performance reviews for administration and staff. They then agree to salary increases and performance awards. The board is presented with comparable salaries and performance data of similar organizations to assist in the decision making. The deliberations are contemporaneously documented and records are kept. This process was last implemented in december 2018.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The form 990 is available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue service code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and other similar websites. The conflict of interest policy, articles of incorporation and by-laws are available upon written request to the organization at 6802 metropolitan avenue, middle village, ny 11379, or by calling the organization at 718-869-2933.

IRS990/Desc0SCHOOL YEAR 2017-18, MARKED THE FIFTH YEAR OF OPERATION FOR MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP. THE SCHOOL CONTINUES TO OFFER FULL SUPPORT TO ITS STUDENTS THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RIGOROUS CURRICULUM AND EXCITING PROGRAMS THAT COMPLEMENT SUBJECT CORE AREAS. THE INCREASE IN STUDENT ENROLLMENT FROM ITS ORIGINAL REGISTERS OF 229 TO 381 STUDENTS HAS ENABLED THE ADMINISTRATION TO HIRE SIX ADDITIONAL STAFF MEMBERS, INCLUDING THREE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.MVP'S INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM HAS NOT BEEN MODIFIED AS IT CONTINUES TO OFFER ALGEBRA AND EARTH SCIENCE COURSES TO ALL ITS 8TH GRADE STUDENTS. THESE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL COURSES PREPARED STUDENTS TO SUCCESSFULLY TAKE THE REGENTS FOR THE ALGEBRA 1 AND EARTH SCIENCE REGENTS EXAMS, OF WHICH PROFICIENCY RATES REACHED 91% AND 59%, RESPECTIVELY. IN ADDITION, 8TH GRADERS ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE NATIONAL LATIN PROFICIENCY AS WELL AS HISTORY REGENTS. OUR PASSING RATE FOR 2017-18 IN LATIN WAS 85% AND 84% FOR THE REGENTS HISTORY. THESE EXAMS ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN OUR GRADUATING STUDENTS TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL, AS THEY RECEIVE CREDITS FOR EACH COURSE. THIS ALSO ALLOW OUR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE AND COMPLETE ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COLLEGE COURSES IN HIGH SCHOOL. THE STEM (ROBOTICS), HEALTH EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE ARTS (THEATER, MUSIC AND BAND) PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO BE IN OUR SCHOLASTIC COURSE OFFERINGS. WE ADDED A FULL TIME VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM IN WHICH ALL GRADES HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN ONGOING HANDS ON ART PROJECTS, DEVELOP ARTISTIC SKILLS, CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN THE ARTS AS WELL AS BECOMING FAMILIAR AND MEETING THE STANDARDS AS REFLECTED ON THE BLUE PRINT FOR THE ARTS. IN THE AREA OF TECHNOLOGY, THE USE OF TABLETS IN OUR 7TH & 8TH GRADE CONTINUES TO BE ENHANCED, SUPPORTING STUDENTS AS THEY IMPROVE THEIR ABILITIES TO USE TECHNOLOGY IN A VARIETY OF WAYS, INCLUDING HAVING ACCESS TO RESOURCES SUCH AS MICROSOFT OFFICE (FOR PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS), AS WELL AS GOOGLE CLASSROOM FOR COLLABORATIVE WORK. MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP PLACES A STRONG EMPHASIS IN PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO ALL ITS STAFF MEMBERS. THIS YEAR WE SECURED THE COACHING AND SUPPORT SERVICES FROM TEACHERS COLLEGE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY. A TEAM OF INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES OFFER "ONE TO ONE" SUPPORT TO SELECT TEACHERS AND PROVIDE WHOLE GROUP TRAINING IN BEST TEACHING PRACTICES WITH A LENS ON THE DANIELSON FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING. THE FFT IDENTIFIES THOSE ASPECTS OF A TEACHER'S RESPONSIBILITIES THAT HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED THROUGH EMPIRICAL STUDIES AND THEORETICAL RESEARCH AS PROMOTING IMPROVED STUDENT LEARNING. ENABLING TEACHERS TO BE TRULY SKILLFUL IN THEIR CRAFT THROUGH PROPER TRAINING AND SUPPORT, GIVES OUR STUDENTS AN ASSURANCE THAT THEY WILL SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION TO THEIR NEXT GRADE LEVEL AND WILL BE PREPARED FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANS. OUR TEACHERS PREPARE OUR STUDENTS TO ATTAIN GRADE LEVEL OR HIGHER WHEN IT COMES TO STATE TESTING. WE USE SCHOOL WIDE, CITY AND STATE ASSESSMENTS DATA TO PLAN PURPOSEFULLY, DRIVE INSTRUCTION AND MONITOR STUDENT ACADEMIC PROGRESS. THIS ENABLES US TO ASSIST OUR STUDENTS EFFECTIVELY SO THAT THEY CAN REACH THE EXPECTED PROFICIENCY LEVELS, THUS FULLY MASTERING EACH STANDARD ON GRADE LEVEL. THE MOST RECENT DATA PROVIDED BY THE STATE AND NYC REFLECTS THAT STUDENTS ACROSS GRADES 6, 7 AND 8 REACHED 64% LEVELS OF PROFICIENCY IN MATHEMATICS, AN INCREASE OF 13% POINTS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT MVP, BOTH IN REALITY AND IN PERCEPTION, OPERATES SOLELY IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE STUDENTS IT SERVES.
