“Free from Harm is a 501c3 non profit charitable organization established in 2011 dedicated to ending animal exploitation through building bridges with other social movements, public education campaigns, grassroots activism and farmed animal rescue. We focus on three core programs online outreach, community outreach and animal rescue.”
“Our online outreach program focuses primarily on publishing posts on our website and distributing it to our social media accounts and email subscriber list. Many of our web posts, social media posts and emails included a call to action, encouraging our members and followers to take action, such as letters to the editors of major media outets, calls and emails to targeted officials, signing petitions, sharing of actions, etc. In 2019 our social media presence continued to expand. We hired a new contractor to help us publish more frequently on Instagram and Twitter. Our Facebook page generated over 10,000,000 impressions and we maintain just under 300,000 members. Our email list exceeded 6,000 self-subscribers, up by 1,000 since the previous year. We published 45 full-length web posts and updated 48 existing web posts which contributed to some 750,000 unique website visitors.”
“Our community outreach program sought out opportunities to engage directly in our local communities as well as communities nationwide where we feel we have a captive and targeted audience and volunteers to support us. While in previous years this mainly included vegan festivals, conferences on sustainability, health and wellness, green living and animal ethics, we changed our strategy in 2019. In 2019 we continued to participate in both online and in-person conferences but we also pursued the goal of building a strong, local grassroots base of activists to develop pressure campaigns targeting powerful corporations like Fairlife and Coca-Cola as well as powerful public officials such as the Chicago mayor and her department heads. More specifically, the Slaughter Free Chicago campaign identified city ordinances that were being routinely violated by slaughterhouses and then pressured the top officials responsible for enforcing those laws. This manifested in some highly publicized actions.”
“Our rescue and rehabilitation program is focused specifically on rescuing, treating and finding suitable permanent homes for abandoned or escaped domestic birds in the Chicago area. Most of our rescues are chickens who have escaped local slaughterhouses or have been abandoned by the owners as former backyard chickens.”
