Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Free from Harm was established in 2011 dedicated to ending animal exploitation through building bridges with other social movements, public education campaigns, grassroots activism and farmed animal rescue. We focus on three core programs: online outreach, community outreach and animal rescue.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Online Outreach: Our online outreach program focuses primarily on publishing solid content on our website and distributing it to our expansive social media and email platforms. It also involves encouraging our members and followers to take action through a variety of creative digital means, such as letters to the editors of major media outlets, petitions, social networking and more. In 2018 our social media and web presence reached new highs. Our Facebook page generated over 15,000,000 impressions and we achieved just under 300,000 followers. Our email list surpassed over 5,000 self-subscribers. We published 40 full-length web posts and updated 26 existing web posts which contributed to our over 2 million website visitors. In addition, Free from Harm as well as FFH's main spokesperson, Robert Grillo, were featured in 8 media outlets that advance the FFH mission and help the organization get more exposure. These include * 5 Fictions that Drive the Animal-centered Holiday Meal, Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine (print only), Holiday issue, 2018 * Incredible New Site Catalogues the Stories of Former Livestock Farmers Who Went Vegan!, (mention) One Green Planet, November, 2018 * 20 Former Meat and Dairy Farmers Who Went Vegan, (mention) Barefoot Vegan Magazine, November, 2018 * Food waste, wasted lives and a vegan recovery, LiveKindly, June, 2018 * Farming is not conservation (letter to the editor), Herald Sun, 6/1/18 * Interview on activism, OmNom Magazine, May, 2018 * Radio interview with Caryn Hartglass, March 2018 * Coverage of animal rights march, WGN, Chicago Tribune, Loyola Phoenix, 2/21/18$0$71,986
Rescue & Rehabilitation: Our rescue and rehabilitation program is focused specifically on rescuing, treating and finding suitable permanent homes for abandoned or escaped domestic birds in the Chicago area. Most of our rescues are chickens who have escaped local slaughterhouses or have been abandoned by the owners as former "backyard chickens." We have also rescued domestic ducks, guinea fowl and quail. In addition, we have assisted with rescuing orphaned chicks from school chick hatching projects and educating schools about alternatives to chick hatching programs. In 2018 we assisted in the rescue of 22 domestic birds. We also provided assistance to 11 rescuers who reached out to us for assistance with medical treatment for rescues, foster homes and the vetting of permanent caregivers for their rescues. Our specific expertise in rescuing domestic birds has made us a trusted partner to 3 other local organizations who called on us in 2018 for assistance with these types of rescues. These are Red Door Animal Shelter, Chicago Animal Care and Control, Chicago Bird Collision Monitors. Free from Harm was also frequently contacted in 2018 via our Facebook page for assistance and advice for about 30 other rescue situations. Finally, building our network of caregivers in 2018 resulted in building new collaborations with 7 Chicago area sanctuaries.$0$17,531
Community Outreach: Our community outreach program seeks out opportunities to engage directly in our local communities as well as communities nationwide where we feel we have a captive and targeted audience and volunteers to support us. These often include vegan festivals, conferences on sustainability, health and wellness, green living and animal ethics. Our volunteers tabled at 8 events in 2018. In addition, our founder Robert Grillo spoke to a variety of audiences including at churches, social clubs, colleges and universities, libraries and community groups.
