DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Wolf Pack Meetings:Met with local wolf supporters to guide them in their advocacy efforts. Provided information regarding nonlethal methods and the available funds for Minnesota farmers who choose to purchase from a variety of methods available including livestock guard animals (dogs or donkeys). Educate wolf advocates about contacting their state and federal legislators to change laws regarding the wolf hunt in Minnesota and trapping in general.January, 2018 Every other Tuesday afternoon, all year, participated in a conference call with the Endangered Species Coalition (ESC). ESC is a large group of mostly-NGO wildlife advocacy groups working for the protection of endangered species. These particular conference calls are specific to the wolf throughout the United States.January 30, 2018 Spoke to two different Careers in Natural Resources classes at St. Cloud State University where 26 and 32 students in attendance.January 31, 2018 Wolf Pack meeting in St. Cloud. February, 2018 Dr. Hackett was in contact with National Park Service supervisor for Isle Royale, Phyllis Green, regarding wolf reintroduction. Phyllis Green opposed this idea.February 5, 2018 Spoke at the Wildlife Populations class at St. Cloud State University where 25 students were in attendance.February 28, 2018 Spoke to St. Cloud State Universitys Ecology Club. March 3, 2018 Wolf Pack meeting in Duluth. March 15, 2018 Dr. Hackett met with Stephanie, the environment policy director for Governor Daytons office. We updated her about the status of the wolf federally and how Minnesota could be responsible for wolf protections/management any day. We discussed how the wolf hunt is still on the books and is a major threat to the wolfs existence. The nonlethal methods program is going well and we are encouraging continuing the program. Most importantly we were asking the governors office to contact us immediately if the wolf loses federal protections and the State of Minnesota then has full responsibility. We also spent time discussing the wolf population estimation methods and our new video called Miscounting Minnesota Wolves. March 15, 2018 Met with Beth Walters, a professor at St. Cloud State University, to discuss wolf counting methods. Ms. Walters is a specialist on wildlife population assessments. March 17, 2018 Wolf Pack meeting in St. Cloud. March 22, 2018 Congress passed a major funding bill and all wolf delisting amendments/riders were stripped from this bill. Congresswoman Betty McCollum played a major role in this. The wolf continues to remain federally protected. Howling For Wolves played a major role advocating for keeping the wolf protected.March 22, 2018 Spoke to a class at Apollo High School in St. Cloud about wolf conservation and careers in wildlife advocacy where 34 students were in attendance.March 27, 2018 Dr. Hackett had a radio interview with AM950 KTNF with Host Mike McIntee to discuss the current status of the wolf federally (protected) and the push to ban all wildlife snaring this legislative session.May 12, 2018 Wolf Pack meeting in St. Cloud. They have over a dozen charges against them, but none were for animal cruelty. July 31 to August 5, 2018 Had a booth at the Benton County Fair. Our table provided our pamphlets and information sheets including the nonlethal methods handout.
