Assistant ELL met with new art teacher, Amanda Olson on February 23rd about connecting art project with Howling For Wolves (ongoing through 2015-2016 school year). 02/26/2015 Ubah Medical Academy Art Project1600 Main Street Hopkins, MN 55343Assistant ELL met with Art Teacher Katie Erickson and her class to discuss a partnership with HFW. Students created a 12 panel wolf painting to display on HFWs #LiveAndLetHowl art page. 02/27/2015 Tabled at AM 950s Blue State Ball at The Aria, Minneapolis, MNHowling For Wolves tabled at AM 950s 11th annual Blue State Ball. Featured speakers included Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann and MN Auditor Rebecca Otto. More than 100 people stopped at the Howling For Wolves table to learn about current bills, obstacles facing wolves and to find out how they could help. 02/28/2015 Youth Art For Saving Minnesota Wolves EventPlymouth Ave Art Studio, 2404 Plymouth Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55411 Youth Art For Saving Minnesota Wolves, a project aimed at cultivating respect for wolves though participation in art, hosted an art gallery open-house. The event featured wolf-themed artwork by 80 students from five Minnesota schools, local music, and a demonstration by Minneapolis K-9 units. Assistant E LL met with the team in Maple Grove, MN on March 4th to talk about wolves and give the team advice on their play, presentation, and outreach efforts. The team decided not to participate in the state competition. 03/10/2015 In These Times author John Collins. Do We Need Wolves? Interviewed Dr. Hackett in February. 04/09/2015 Educational outreach at Rogers Elementary School, Rogers, and Discovery Elementary School, Buffalo12521 Main Street, Rogers, MN 55374 and 301 2nd Ave NE, Buffalo, MN 55313HFW Assistant ELL taught more than 200 elementary students grades 3-5 about wolves in Buffalo and Rogers, MN on April 9. Students learned about wolf behavior and physiology, discovered the many ecologic benefits of wolves, and worked with their teachers to create wolf-inspired art for HFWs #LiveAndLetHowl art campaign. (Rogers teacher Sue Polzine)04/11/2015 Medicine of the Wolf Film Party and Premiere, Minneapolis, MNMatties On Maine (party), St. Anthony Main Theater (Saturday showing), Northrup Best Buy Theater (Sunday showing)The Award-winning documentary Medicine of the Wolf premiered at the Minneapolis Saint Paul International Film Festival on April 11. Howling For Wolves was featured in the film and hosted a pre-premiere party at the local restaurant Matties On Maine. Over 100 supporters and volunteers gathered for food, drinks, and the chance to meet Medicine of the Wolf Director Julia Huffman, and celebrated artist and photographer Jim Brandenburg, and HFW President Maureen Hackett. Medicine of the Wolf won the Audience Choice award for best film. 04/22/2015 Earth Day presentation at the School of Environmental Studies12155 Johnny Cake Ridge Rd, Apple Valley, MN 55124In honor of Earth Day, Dr. Maureen Hackett presented at the School of Environmental Studies in Apple Valley, MN. Her presentation included PowerPoint slides and video showing of How Wolves Change Rivers emphasized the historical persecution of wolves and the environmental, cultural, and artistic importance of wolves. 04/23-24/2015 Wolf Stewards Conference, Ashland, WIAttended by Dr. Hackett who actively participated in what was mostly a very one-sided conference with clear agenda of speakers and discussion of issues indicating an extreme reluctance to move away from the status quo set forth by the agency leaders at the meeting. Talks included the Isle Royale wolves and a talk by Peggy (Margaret) Callahan, describing how she and Dr. Mech impregnated coyotes with wolf sperm to create a species hybrid of Woyotes. Then (accidentally) the younger generation reproduced again and when those young parents did not care for the pups they gave the hybrid pups to wolves to raise. Very, very concerning unethical research. http://www.northland.edu/wolfstewards.htm05/2/2015 No Kill Animal Walk, St. Paul, MNHeld at the MN State Fairgrounds, attracts thousands of participants. Howling For Wolves was joined by trapped a sculpture made of old leg hold and conibear traps, and flesh-cutting snares. The sculpture is designed to call into focus the cruelty of snaring and trapping.05/3/2015 MayDay Parade and Festival, Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis, MNHowling For Wolves volunteers marched in the MayDay parade on May 5. The parade and accompanying festival is a 41-year Minneapolis tradition, drawing 40,000-50,000 participants annually. Dr. Hacketts talk was for a period that lasted about 40 minutes.05/14-15/2015 Art project at Elk River High School900 School St. NW, Elk River, MN 55330Howling For Wolves partnered with Elk River High Schools Drawing 2 & 3 Art class to spend time learning about wolves and celebrating them through wolf-inspired art. Following a presentation from Dr. Maureen Hackett, students spent two days creating artwork with HFW volunteer and artist Bradley Scott Davis. 06/23/2015 National Congress of American Indians Wolf Round TableSemi-Annual conference that draws indigenous Native American Indians. Congresswoman Betty McCollum was sponsored by the Leech Lake Band Of Ojibwe board Chairwoman Carey Jones. Other leaders of Ojibwe tribes were in attendance including Red Lake Nation, Chairman Seti. Dr. Hackett was integral to updating the leaders about wolf issues at the federal and state levels in the Midwest.06/27-28/2015 Pride Festival, Minneapolis, MNTent with volunteers displaying information about trapping wolves as a method used in the wolf hunt. Theme focused on Stop The Wolf Hunt. 07/15-16/2015 Wolf and Wildlife Coexistence Conference at Ho Chunk casino in Bariboo Wisconsin. Excellent presentations. Dr. Hackett went with supporters who drove and helped table at the event where #LiveAndLetHowl material was distributed. Dr. Hackett addressed the group and discussed potential advocacy actions.07/24/2015 Future Farmers of America, Dassel-Cokato (MN) Debate Team preparation/workshopPresentation by Dr. Hackett to the Dassel-Cokato Agricultural Issues Debate team in preparation for competition at the National FFA AgriculturaI Issues Career Development Event for October 2015. This debate team chose the wolf hunt in Minnesota as their topic and advanced to the national level to compete in Louisville, Kentucky in October 2015. Their response to Dr. Hacketts 2.5 hour preparation session was outstanding. Dr. Hackett provided them with extensive resources and information along with a lengthy multimedia talk with participation by the 5 students and their 2 adult leaders including Kevin Dahlman.08/10/2015 Press release response to the MN DNRs publication of the trend surveys of wolf population 2015. Was interviewed by WCCO radio for the news portion. Also interviewed for a Duluth radio show.08/12/2015 Dr. Hackett was interviewed by WCCO radio for the Jon Hines Show, guest hosted by Jerilyn Steele.08/21/2015 Visit by Dr. Hackett to Red Lake Nation celebration of the opening of their Community College and Government Center. Met Dan King college president and Former Chair Floyd Buck Jourdain.08/26-09/7 2015 Minnesota State Fair. Approximately 90 volunteers worked at our booth to answer questions and give out our materials. Howling For Wolves was located in the Education Building where a newly designed booth with newly designed materials was distributed and on display. The following were developed for the Fair: 2 newly-developed Coloring for Kids sheets by artist Genevieve Mariani with a Did You Know backside section and reference to our website, new tri-fold brochure; 3 different postcards for different times of year fall wolf, winter wolf, and spring wolf pups. Our booth had laptops on hand for take actions and to show people our website and how they can participate in the art submissions.
