“Laughs for the Troops (LFTT) is dedicated to helping heal the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) through laughter for veterans, first responders and their family members. Completing its fourth year in operation (2018), several events were hosted throughout the year and in different parts of the country, which included fun, fellowship events for military and first responders, as well as the general public who took part through the fund-raising arm Laughs for the troops founder, Thomas Brown, was joined by fellow comedians Happy Cole, Tommy Drake, and Phil Palisoul, and entertainer Consuela Ivy, to kick off the year in Canton, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. In Canton, a special day was held on May 19 at the Garland Mountain Sporting Clays where the community, along with some corporate sponsors, came together for an outing for fun and enjoyment while introducing donors to Laughs for the Troops and bringing awareness to the mission of LFTT and the need to support those suffering from PTSD and TBI. Approximately 60 club members spent the day with the comedians and LFTT volunteers to learn how they could continue supporting LFTT. Following the full day at Garland, there was a comedy show held - free for veterans to attend - with the comedians performing and providing another way that Canton residents could get involved with LFTT and provide volunteer support or monetary support. Approximately 100 citizens attended the Canton Historic Theater in downtown Canton, for the Funniest Night in American sampling. There were both adults and children in attendance and great time was had by all. During this weekend, LFTT had the amazing support of VLink, a local video company. They took the time to interview our guest family for the event, the O'Dell's, and then videoed the clay shooting event, as well as the comedy show and the comedians. From this b-roll they collected, they created an amazing video about Laughs for the Troops that we've been able to share through our website and social media. It also gave our featured family the opportunity to tell their story and share the impact that their involvement with LFTT has had on them. Overall it was a very touching experience and without the help of VLink, we wouldn't have had the opportunity to create such a thoughtful, well-produced video to share. The annual Laughs for the Troops Comedy on the Greens weekend at Disney's Shades of Green Resort was held on Sept. 21 in Orlando, Florida. The day began with the Comedy on the Greens golf tournament. Working with the local Orlando Veterans Administration hospital and the Camaraderie Foundation, Laughs for the Troops had close to 60 veteran golfers of the 80 golfers playing for free, whether sponsored by an individual or a company. They were treated to breakfast during warm-ups, a fun day of golf and then an awards luncheon. Later that evening, also at Disney's Shades of Green Resort, the Funniest Night in America comedy showcase took place. This comedy show was set up to invite some of the local comedians to showcase their talents for the guest veterans and their families. One hundred people attended the comedy show and dinner, with more than 150 registered, the veteran and their families made up 103 of the attending list. Toward the end of 2018, the LFTT volunteer team focused on identifying potential partners and began conversations with Disney (Orlando), for one, and strengthened the relationship with the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, and the Orlando VA, as well as partnered with Camaraderie Foundation, another organization focusing on the well-being of military members and their families from the 9-11 time period forward. It's great to partner with others that are provided services to Veterans that LFTT can complement.”
