Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Community development and poverty reduction in Ethiopia. Our service to the poorest is inspired by Christ. 1. Tarkanfi-Start Walking (TSW) provides poor communities in Ethiopia with a gifted community development leader and teacher -- a volunteer missionary who is a US citizen , a native Ethiopian, and a community development professional. This volunteer missionary serves as the unpaid CEO of the Ethiopian non-profit, Tarkanfi Sustainable Development (TSD). In addition, she manages compassionate activities beyond the scope of TSD, networks widely, welcomes international guests, and educates audiences about the condition of impoverished people in Ethiopia. 2. Tarkanfi-Start Walking (TSW) provides funds for community development, poverty reduction, and emergency relief activities in Ethiopia.

Education: We provided funds and leadership to TSD for an on-going double-project to continue to improve education for the Haro community. 1.) construction of an enclosed kindergarten-preschool compound with latrine, 2.) construction of a school feeding center Once completed, the kindergarten will attract and serve an estimated 100 K and pre-K children per year. The feeding center will provide a sanitary kitchen and dining area for the entire school estimated at 600 when the new center opens in late 2024 or early 2025. The Haro community and school are partners in this project, contributing local wisdom, labor, local materials, money (small amounts), and commitment to maintenance.$29,000$78
Education: We provided funds and leadership to TSD for a project to improve elementary education for the remote, impoverished, Haro rural community. 4 concrete block classrooms were built and furnished. Latrines were built. Trees which will hold soil and produce shade were planted with a plan for continued care. The community was involved at every step. Proud teachers and students began using the new classrooms in September. The new classrooms, along with other school improvements are attracting many more students to the school. Currently, more than 450 students are using the classrooms; attending in shifts. Over time, these long-lasting classrooms will serve thousands of students.$17,000$43
Clean Water: We provided funds and leadership to TSD for the first safe water for 3 remote rural communities. People can now come from near and far to fill large containers with safe water to bring back to their often large households. One water point is at a school, providing safe water for the school and for area families. The other two water points are at the site of unprotected rural springs that are now capped to provide safe water. Our funding included money for the formation of a women's micro-finance co-op -- every water project needs a community group with a strong interest, and training, to maintain the water point, And all water projects include shade tree care and planting. An estimated 3,000 people of all ages now have access to clean water thanks to these 3 projects.$16,300$147
